NDC Oredo: Spartacus Faults Igharo’s Appointment As Campaign Committee Coordinator
The Assistant Publicity Secretary of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Oredo Local Government Area, Edo State, Comrade Okhilua Osadebamen Spartacus, has faulted the appointment of Mr. Nathaniel Igharo as Coordinator of the NDC Oredo LGA Campaign Committee, describing it as contrary to the provisions of the party’s constitution.
Spartacus made the position known in an open letter addressed to Igharo and dated October 5, 2026, following a disagreement over the composition and leadership of the campaign committee at the NDC Oredo LGA meeting held on October 3.
He argued that the party’s constitution already assigns the responsibility of coordinating campaigns, rallies and other field activities to the Organizing Secretary.
Spartacus specifically cited Article 13:13.05(iv) of the NDC Constitution, which empowers the Organizing Secretary to “coordinate all campaigns, rallies and other field activities of the Party.”
He therefore questioned the rationale behind appointing Igharo as head of the Oredo LGA Campaign Committee when, according to him, the office of the LGA Organizing Secretary, currently occupied by Comrade Igbinomwanhia Ade, carries the constitutional responsibility.
He further cited Article 13:13.17, which he said extends the relevant functions and powers of party offices to corresponding offices at other levels.
The NDC official stressed that his objection was not based on personal disagreement with Igharo but on the need for the party to respect and operate within the provisions of its constitution.
“I raised the observation in order to emphasize the need for us to conduct the affairs of our Party with utmost respect for and in conformity with the provisions of the Constitution,” Spartacus stated.
He also disclosed that his concerns were raised publicly during the October 3 meeting and that he resisted responding to what he described as dismissive and disrespectful remarks directed at him during the disagreement.
Spartacus commended the NDC Edo State Deputy Chairman and Leader of Edo South, Barrister Patrick Agbontaen, for allowing him to express his contrary position during the meeting, despite disagreeing with his interpretation of the matter.
He, however, rejected the description of members who raise opposing views as “moles,” insisting that dissent and constructive criticism should be accommodated within a democratic political organisation.
Questions Experience Behind Appointment
Spartacus also questioned the argument that experience informed Igharo’s appointment as campaign committee coordinator.
He asked why the experience of the LGA Organizing Secretary had not been tested by allowing him to perform the constitutional duties attached to his office before another person was appointed to coordinate the campaign.
He further questioned what he described as inconsistencies in the party’s approach to experience, internal democracy and political appointments.
According to him, the issue goes beyond Igharo’s personality and concerns the principle of allowing party officials to exercise the responsibilities expressly assigned to their offices.
Spartacus also took exception to a statement he attributed to Igharo during the meeting, saying the remark gave him the impression that Igharo was dismissive of his insistence on strict adherence to the party’s constitution.
He argued that political contests should be based on ideas, dialogue and established rules rather than intimidation or personal confrontation.
Citing the NDC Constitution, Spartacus said the party was established to promote “politics of ideas” and should therefore encourage members to express divergent opinions on issues affecting the organisation.
Demands Reconstitution Of Campaign Committee
Spartacus disclosed that he had declined an offer to serve on the Oredo LGA Campaign Committee unless certain conditions were met.
He demanded that Comrade Igbinomwanhia Ade, the LGA Organizing Secretary, be allowed to serve as Coordinator/Head of the campaign committee, while Igharo serves as Deputy Coordinator.
Alternatively, he said the Organizing Secretary should be given the first right of refusal to determine whether he would accept or decline the responsibility before Igharo could act in his capacity.
He also called for the campaign committee to be reconstituted to accommodate representatives from all 12 wards in Oredo LGA.
According to him, Wards 3, 4, 6, 7, 10 and 12 were excluded from the initial composition and should be included to ensure adequate representation.
Spartacus warned that failure to address the concerns could lead him and members of his ward to withdraw from the activities of the Oredo LGA Campaign Committee and instead organise their campaign activities at the ward level in support of the NDC.
He said he had consulted the LGA Organizing Secretary, who, according to him, also objected to the appointment and maintained that he should be allowed to discharge the constitutional responsibilities of his office.
Accuses LGA Chairman Of Unilateral Decision
The Assistant Publicity Secretary further accused the NDC Oredo LGA Chairman, Mr. Tam Odiase, of repeatedly acting contrary to the party’s constitution.
He alleged that the appointment of Igharo contradicted an earlier resolution reached by the LGA Executive to have the Organizing Secretary head and coordinate the campaign committee.
Spartacus described the alleged unilateral decision as part of what he termed a pattern of disregard for internal party processes.
He maintained that his position was not motivated by personal ambition, financial considerations or the desire for political prominence, but by his stated commitment to constitutionalism, internal democracy and inclusive participation within the NDC.
He urged party leaders and members to uphold the constitution and ensure that the activities of the Oredo LGA chapter are conducted in accordance with established party rules.
