Aiguobarueghian’s 12th Bill Replaces 49-Year-Old Fire Law In Edo

Hon. Charity Iguodala Iguobarueghian has been commended for sponsoring 12 bills, including legislation that repealed Edo State’s 49-year-old Fire Services Law of 1975 and established a modern legal framework for fire prevention, emergency response and rescue operations.

The bill, titled A Bill for a Law to Repeal the Fire Services Law No. 7, 1975 and to Establish and Regulate the Edo State Fire and Rescue Service, 2024, and for Other Connected Purposes, is being presented as a significant contribution to public safety and institutional reform in the state.

For nearly five decades, the state's fire service operated under legislation enacted in 1975, which the bill's promoters consider outdated in the face of evolving emergency response demands, fire prevention standards and disaster management requirements.

The new law seeks to provide a more comprehensive framework for the operation and regulation of the Edo State Fire and Rescue Service, with emphasis on improved emergency response, professional training, recruitment and access to modern firefighting equipment.

Beyond conventional firefighting, the legislation broadens the service's responsibilities to include rescue operations, positioning it to respond more effectively to emergencies and disasters while helping to minimise the loss of lives and property.

The achievement also highlights Iguobarueghian's legislative record, with his 12 sponsored bills cited by his supporters as evidence of his commitment to lawmaking and institutional development.

According to a statement by CIA Media, the lawmaker's record reflects an approach to public service that prioritises practical outcomes and lasting contributions over political rhetoric.

The statement further noted that Iguobarueghian's experience in the Edo State House of Assembly would be valuable as he seeks to represent Ovia Federal Constituency in the National Assembly.

It described his legislative record as evidence of his capacity to contribute to lawmaking and public policy at the national level, while urging constituents to consider his record of performance in assessing his suitability for higher office.

For his supporters, the replacement of the decades-old fire services legislation represents an example of how lawmaking can address institutional shortcomings and strengthen public safety.
