Why Ebonyi Farmers Are Celebrating Nwifuru — Izzi LGA Farmers Highlight Impact Of Agricultural Inputs
Farmers in Ebonyi State, particularly in Izzi Local Government Area, have continued to acknowledge the impact of agricultural interventions under the administration of Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, citing regular access to farm inputs and other initiatives aimed at boosting food production.
The latest intervention was witnessed in Izzi LGA, where the Ebonyi State Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) and Chairman of Izzi Local Government Area, Hon. Mrs. Helen Nnenna Aduga, flagged off the distribution of thousands of bags of fertiliser to farmers across the 14 wards of the council.
The exercise is part of the allocation of 4,000 bags of fertiliser to each of the 13 Local Government Areas of the State by Governor Nwifuru as part of efforts to support farmers, reduce the cost of agricultural production and strengthen food security.
Aduga, alongside members of the Distribution Committee led by Arc. Odilichukwu Okeye, supervised the distribution exercise at the Council Headquarters in Iboko, ensuring that the farm inputs reached beneficiaries across the various wards.
The development has further highlighted the role of local government authorities in complementing the agricultural policies and programmes of the state government.
The agricultural interventions under Governor Nwifuru, according to the report, extend beyond the distribution of farm inputs. They also include investments in various agricultural sub-sectors, including the revitalisation of the Ebonyi Rice Mills located across the three Senatorial Zones of the State and the development of the Ebonyi State Hatchery.
These initiatives are aimed at improving agricultural productivity, strengthening the capacity of farmers and making essential inputs more accessible to those engaged in farming.
The experiences and testimonies of some farmers who participated in the distribution exercise further underscored the significance of the intervention, particularly at a time when the cost of agricultural inputs remains a major concern for farmers.
The Izzi exercise, therefore, provides a local perspective on the wider agricultural interventions being implemented across Ebonyi State under Governor Nwifuru.
For the Ebonyi State ALGON leadership under Hon. Mrs. Helen Nnenna Aduga, ensuring that government interventions get to the grassroots remains an important part of local government administration.
The distribution of the fertilisers in Izzi also reflects the administration's stated emphasis on supporting agriculture and improving the conditions under which farmers operate.
As Plato is quoted as saying, “The first and greatest victory is to conquer oneself,” a principle that underscores discipline and commitment in leadership. In Izzi, the distribution exercise demonstrated the efforts of the local government leadership and the distribution committee to ensure that the intervention reached farmers across the council.
With agriculture remaining a major component of Ebonyi's economy, continued support through farm inputs and other agricultural interventions is expected to remain important to farmers and food production across the State.
