Nwedu Celebrates Ojiji Izzi Nnodo, Prays For Bountiful Harvest, Peace, Unity
Hon. Nwedu Abraham Nwedu, a member of the Ebonyi State Internal Revenue Service (EBSIRS), has joined sons and daughters of Izzi Nnodo at home and in the diaspora in celebrating the annual Ojiji Izzi New Yam Festival, describing the occasion as a significant celebration of culture, thanksgiving, unity and communal identity.
In his goodwill message, Nwedu said the festival provides an opportunity for the people of Izzi to appreciate God for the harvest and to celebrate the rich cultural heritage passed down through generations.
Ojiji is traditionally associated with the new yam harvest and serves as a period of thanksgiving, family reunions, cultural expression, reconciliation and renewed bonds among the people. The celebration has also been described as an important symbol of unity and the agricultural heritage of Izzi Nnodo.
Nwedu said the presentation and consumption of the first yam carries deep significance, particularly because yam occupies an important place in the social and agricultural life of the Izzi people.
He prayed that the new farming season would bring greater abundance to farmers and that the barns of families across Izzi land would remain filled throughout the year.
“May our land be blessed. May our barns never be empty. May peace reign in Izzi land,” Nwedu prayed.
He further called for continued unity, peaceful coexistence and mutual support among the people, stressing that cultural celebrations such as Ojiji provide opportunities for sons and daughters of Izzi to reconnect with their roots and strengthen the bonds that bind them together.
Nwedu also urged the younger generation to appreciate and preserve the cultural values associated with Ojiji, saying the festival represents more than the celebration of a new harvest but also the preservation of identity, history and communal heritage.
He noted that the agricultural significance of the festival also highlights the importance of supporting farmers and strengthening food production, particularly as agriculture remains central to the livelihood of many families in Ebonyi State.
The EBSIRS member congratulated traditional rulers, community leaders, families, farmers, youths, women and all sons and daughters of Izzi Nnodo on the celebration.
He wished the people a peaceful and memorable festival, praying for good health, prosperity, bumper harvests, unity and continued development across Izzi land.
“Happy Ojiji Izzi Nnodo to all sons and daughters of Izzi. May this season usher in greater abundance, peace, progress and prosperity for our people.”
