June 12: Democracy Best Path to National Unity, Progress – Gov. Fubara
The Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, has reaffirmed that democracy remains Nigeria’s most effective system of governance, describing it as the strongest pathway to national unity, progress, and prosperity.
In a goodwill message to Nigerians on the occasion of the 2026 Democracy Day, Governor Fubara said June 12 represents more than a historic date, noting that it symbolizes the enduring struggle, sacrifices, and collective aspirations of Nigerians for freedom, justice, and representative governance.
He paid tribute to the heroes and heroines of Nigeria’s democratic journey, particularly the late MKO Abiola, his wife Kudirat Abiola, and other patriots who contributed to the country’s return to democratic rule, describing their sacrifices as a lasting inspiration for successive generations.
According to the governor, Nigeria’s democracy has continued to evolve since the historic June 12, 1993 presidential election, despite challenges and setbacks.
“Our democratic journey has not been without difficulties, but the resilience of our institutions and the determination of our people have kept the nation moving forward,” he said, adding that the freedom to express opinions and elect leaders through the ballot remains one of Nigeria’s greatest achievements.
Governor Fubara stressed that Nigeria’s diversity should be seen as a strength rather than a weakness, noting that democracy provides the framework to promote inclusion, build consensus, and drive sustainable development.
He also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his commitment to the Renewed Hope Agenda, particularly efforts aimed at economic revitalization, improved security, and strengthening democratic institutions.
Reiterating Rivers State’s readiness to collaborate with the Federal Government, Fubara said his administration would continue to support policies that promote infrastructure development, job creation, quality education, healthcare delivery, and good governance.
He urged Nigerians across political, ethnic, and religious divides to use the Democracy Day celebration to renew their commitment to national unity and democratic ideals, emphasizing accountability, transparency, tolerance, and respect for the rule of law.
“Democracy must not be viewed merely as a periodic electoral exercise but as a daily responsibility to build a better nation,” he said, expressing optimism that Nigeria can achieve greater prosperity through unity and collective effort.
Governor Fubara concluded by calling on citizens to remain hopeful and committed to peace, dialogue, and national development, adding that a stronger and more inclusive Nigeria is possible for future generations.
