Diri Pays Homage To New Atissa Monarch, Assures Resumption Of Obogoro Erosion Project

The Governor of Bayelsa State, Douye Diri, on Thursday paid a courtesy visit to the newly installed monarch of Atissa Kingdom, King Diemeze Victor Awala, where he reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to accelerated development across the state capital, Yenagoa.

King Awala, who was installed on May 2, 2026 as the 8th Ebeni-Ibe of Atissa Kingdom, hosted the governor at his palace in Obogoro during the visit, which was described as a gesture of solidarity and celebration of his ascension to the throne.
Governor Diri said the visit was to identify with the monarch and congratulate him on his coronation, noting that he had known the king over the years and was confident in his ability to lead the kingdom effectively.

He commended the people of Atissa for their peaceful conduct during the transition following the passing and burial of their late monarch, describing it as consistent with his administration’s drive for peace and unity across Bayelsa State.
“The kingdom is a crucial part of Yenagoa and you are also hosting the Government House. Indeed, you are our landlord,” the governor said, while urging continued cooperation between traditional institutions and government for sustained peace and development.

On calls for more developmental projects, Governor Diri urged the kingdom to properly document its requests, assuring that they would be considered within available resources. He also addressed concerns over the suspension of the Obogoro land reclamation project, explaining that a proper technical study was initially not conducted, but assured that the project would resume once assessments are completed.
In his response, King Awala thanked the governor for the visit, describing it as a sign of inclusion and respect for the kingdom. He also appreciated the state government’s support during the burial of the late monarch and appealed for assistance in completing the palace project, as well as road construction in Famgbe, Yenaka, and Bebelebiri communities.
