Tonye Cole Withdraws from Rivers APC Governorship Primaries, Backs Party Unity
A governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, Tonye P. Cole, has withdrawn from the party’s forthcoming gubernatorial primaries, citing the need to preserve unity and stability within the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a press statement issued on Wednesday, Cole said his decision followed extensive consultations with members of his political team, supporters, associates, and key stakeholders after a critical meeting convened by the national leadership of the APC to address the future of the party in Rivers State.
The former governorship candidate stated that he chose to step aside in deference to the supremacy of the party and in the overriding interest of peace, reconciliation, and collective progress within the Rivers APC.
According to him, he has consistently advocated dialogue and unity among the various factions within the party, stressing that strong institutions remain the foundation for sustainable development and democratic progress.
Cole formally announced his withdrawal from the race and pledged his support and cooperation to whoever emerges as the APC candidate at the conclusion of the primaries.
He described the decision as one reached after deep reflection and driven by patriotism, commitment to party stability, and the overall development of Rivers State.
The APC chieftain also expressed gratitude to party faithful, supporters, youths, women groups, elders, and other stakeholders across the state who stood by him throughout his political journey.
Despite stepping aside from the contest, Cole reaffirmed his commitment to the ideals and aspirations that united his supporters, pledging to continue working for the growth of the party and the development of Rivers State.
He further urged his supporters to remain peaceful, calm, and loyal to the leadership of the APC while mobilising support for the party and its candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Cole concluded by calling for unity among party members in order to secure victory for the APC and President Bola Tinubu in the next electoral cycle.
