Nwifuru’s Education Revolution Transforms Basic Schools In Ebonyi
Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru’s administration has continued to redefine the landscape of basic education in Ebonyi State through massive infrastructural development, policy reforms, digital innovation, teacher recruitment, and strategic educational partnerships aimed at improving learning outcomes across the State.
Within three years in office, the administration has embarked on what observers describe as one of the most ambitious transformations of the basic education sector in the history of Ebonyi State.
Across the thirteen Local Government Areas, new classroom blocks and modern learning facilities are replacing overcrowded and dilapidated structures that previously hindered effective teaching and learning.
Among the major interventions is the construction of over 39 modern one-storey classroom blocks, each comprising 22 classrooms, offices, convenience facilities, and other essential amenities designed to provide a conducive learning environment for pupils.
In addition, the Ebonyi State Universal Basic Education Board (UBEB) has constructed more than 50 blocks of 12-classroom buildings strategically located across the State to strengthen access to quality basic education.
The administration also complemented the infrastructure projects with the provision of motorized boreholes, overhead tank stands, fetching bays, and 5,000-litre water tanks in model and pilot schools to improve access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene within school environments.
Governor Nwifuru’s commitment to science and innovation is equally evident in the construction and equipping of an ultra-modern science laboratory at Community Secondary School, Nwofe Agbaja in Izzi Local Government Area. Science equipment supplied to Oferekpe Agbaja Secondary School has also enhanced practical learning and stimulated students’ interest in science education.
Another milestone recorded under the administration is the establishment of the Nigerian Navy Secondary School at Oferekpe Agbaja, a development considered significant in expanding access to quality and disciplined secondary education in the State. Construction work at the institution is said to be progressing steadily.
The government has also taken decisive steps to restore standards within the education sector through the closure and sanitization of illegal and unapproved private schools operating across the State. The move, according to education stakeholders, has strengthened confidence in public schools and improved educational standards.
In the area of digital transformation, the administration introduced online registration and result checking for Primary Six Transitional Examinations and the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE). The State Examination Development Centre has equally been fully digitalized to improve efficiency, transparency, and accessibility.
Key examinations, including the First School Leaving Certificate, Common Entrance, and BECE, which previously suffered inconsistencies, have now been stabilized under the current administration.
The impact of these reforms has started reflecting in students’ academic performance, with Ebonyi State emerging among Nigeria’s top-performing states in the National Examinations Council (NECO), ranking third nationally in recent assessments.
To strengthen manpower within the sector, the administration recruited 2,000 teachers across public schools while additional education officers and administrators were employed into the Ministry of Education to improve supervision and policy implementation.
The government also addressed the welfare of retired teachers through the gradual payment of gratuities owed since 1996, while the approved ₦20,000 palliative for civil servants, including teachers, provided additional support amid prevailing economic challenges.
As part of efforts to reduce financial burdens on parents, the State introduced unified textbooks for schools and abolished excessive graduation ceremonies and end-of-year parties often imposed by schools.
School supervision and data management have equally improved through regular monitoring exercises conducted by inspectorate teams and annual school census exercises carried out consistently from the 2022/2023 academic session to the ongoing 2025/2026 exercise.
The administration’s collaboration with development partners, including the USAID Early Grade Reading Programme and Whisper for Humanity, also led to the production and distribution of over 100,000 instructional materials to schools across the State to enhance literacy and classroom learning.
To improve operational efficiency, the Ministry of Education was further equipped with official vehicles and motorcycles for effective school monitoring and project supervision.
Education analysts say the interventions by Governor Nwifuru’s administration go beyond physical infrastructure, describing them as long-term investments aimed at building a stronger educational foundation for future generations in Ebonyi State.
With visible improvements in infrastructure, digital innovation, teacher recruitment, welfare, supervision, and students’ academic performance, many believe the State is steadily positioning itself as a model for educational development in Nigeria.
