Nwifuru’s Three-Year Reforms Redefine Tertiary Education In Ebonyi
Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru’s administration has continued to record major milestones in the transformation of tertiary education in Ebonyi State through extensive infrastructural development, policy reforms, scholarship programmes, and welfare interventions aimed at repositioning the sector for global competitiveness.
Within three years in office, the administration has embarked on ambitious projects across universities and other tertiary institutions in the State, significantly improving learning environments, institutional capacity, and access to quality higher education.
At the centre of the reforms is the rapid development of the Ebonyi State University of ICT, Science and Technology at Oferekpe Agbaja and the University of Aeronautic Engineering, both of which have witnessed large-scale infrastructural expansion.
One of the landmark projects is the ongoing construction of a modern Senate and administrative building at the ICT University, currently nearing completion. The three-storey structure is expected to serve as a major administrative hub and symbol of the State’s commitment to global standards in higher education.
The administration is also constructing eight luxury three-storey hostel complexes across the new-generation universities to provide safe and comfortable accommodation for students. The hostels, comprising separate male and female blocks, are designed to improve campus life and student welfare.
Similarly, eight modern two-storey residential buildings are under construction for lecturers and other university personnel as part of efforts to strengthen the academic workforce and provide conducive living conditions for staff.
To further improve academic infrastructure, the government has embarked on the construction of twelve faculty buildings across tertiary institutions in the State, including new faculty complexes for the University of ICT, the University of Aeronautic Engineering, and Ebonyi State University (EBSU).
Among the notable projects are the new Faculty of Law Complex at the College of Agricultural Sciences (CAS) Campus and the Faculty of Education Complex at the Ishieke Campus of EBSU.
At Ebonyi State University, the administration has also carried out extensive renovations and environmental upgrades. The Postgraduate School has been renovated with reroofing, ceiling replacement, and repainting works aimed at improving the learning environment for postgraduate students.
Internal road networks within the university have equally been reconstructed using concrete pavement, while modern streetlights and solar-powered lighting systems have been installed to improve safety and accessibility on campus.
The university’s connection to the national grid has further enhanced power supply and institutional stability.
As part of broader institutional planning, perimeter fencing projects at the University of ICT and the University of Aeronautic Engineering are nearing completion, while approval has been granted for the fencing of the main campus of Ebonyi State University to strengthen security and orderly development.
The administration has also demonstrated commitment to social responsibility through the provision of 16 resettlement buildings for host communities affected by the development of the ICT University permanent site. The intervention includes 15 bungalows and one duplex constructed to accommodate displaced residents.
In the area of human capital development, Governor Nwifuru’s administration has expanded scholarship opportunities for Ebonyi students within and outside Nigeria.
No fewer than 300 students have been sponsored for postgraduate studies in international institutions, including the University of Bolton and Anglia Ruskin University in the United Kingdom. In addition, over 500 students have been supported to pursue Masters and Doctorate degrees in universities across Nigeria.
The administration has also introduced welfare reforms aimed at stabilizing tertiary institutions in the State. Ebonyi State University received ₦700 million in outstanding subvention, while its monthly allocation was increased from ₦150 million to ₦280 million.
Salaries of university workers are now reportedly paid regularly, with additional interventions addressing outstanding arrears. Academic staff salaries were increased by 20 percent, while non-academic staff received a 10 percent salary increment.
To improve access to higher education, tuition fees at Ebonyi State University were reduced by 10 percent, while students were granted the option of paying fees in instalments to ease financial pressure on families.
In a move to encourage academic excellence, first-class graduates of Ebonyi State University are now offered automatic employment and postgraduate scholarship opportunities under the current administration.
Another major milestone recorded within the period is the upgrading of the Ebonyi State College of Education, Ikwo, into a University of Education, a development expected to strengthen teacher education and improve instructional quality across the State.
The government is also advancing plans for the establishment of the Federal University of Sports in Nkalagu, while construction is ongoing on a new teaching hospital for the ICT University at Amechara General Hospital.
Observers say the interventions by Governor Nwifuru’s administration have positioned Ebonyi State as one of the emerging centres of educational advancement in Nigeria.
Through sustained investment in infrastructure, institutional reforms, staff welfare, and human capital development, the administration is steadily laying a strong foundation for a more competitive and globally relevant tertiary education system in Ebonyi State.
