Fubara Reaffirms Commitment To Peace, Unity As Rivers Marks 59th Anniversary

Governor Siminalayi Fubara has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to peace, unity, security, and inclusive development as Rivers State celebrates its 59th anniversary.

In a goodwill message issued on Wednesday to commemorate the anniversary, the governor said the people of the state had continued to demonstrate resilience, strength, and unity despite the challenges encountered over the years.

Fubara described the enduring spirit of togetherness among the various ethnic nationalities in the state as one of Rivers State’s greatest strengths and a solid foundation for sustainable peace, stability, and progress.

He noted that ethnic groups such as the Ijaw, Ikwerre, Ogoni, Etche, Ekpeye, Andoni, Kalabari, and others had continued to coexist peacefully, contributing immensely to the development and growth of the state.

The governor also highlighted Rivers State’s strategic role in Nigeria’s economy, stressing that the state remained a major contributor not only because of its rich oil and gas resources but also due to the outstanding achievements of its people in academia, business, entertainment, jurisprudence, public service, and sports.

Fubara assured residents that his administration would continue to implement policies and programmes aimed at promoting peace, protecting lives and property, and ensuring balanced development across all Local Government Areas of the state.

According to him, governance must remain people-oriented and impactful, with every part of the state receiving equal attention in terms of development and opportunities.

The governor paid tribute to the founding fathers and elders of Rivers State for sustaining the spirit of unity and peaceful coexistence over the decades.

He also urged youths in the state to remain hopeful, responsible, and committed to building a greater Rivers State through hard work, patriotism, and innovation.

Fubara further acknowledged the role of women in strengthening families and communities, describing them as critical partners in the continued growth and stability of the state.

He called on all Rivers people to use the anniversary celebration as an opportunity for reflection and renewed commitment to peaceful coexistence, dialogue, mutual respect, and collective progress.

The governor stressed that the unity and future of Rivers State must always take precedence over personal interests and political differences.

Rivers State was created on May 27, 1967, by the administration of former Head of State, Yakubu Gowon, following the creation of 12 states from Nigeria’s former four regions.
