Uhunmwode Council Chairperson Distributes Sanitary Pads To Schoolgirls Under Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Initiative

The Chairperson of Uhunmwode Local Government Council in Edo State, Mrs. Faith Imafidon, has facilitated the distribution of sanitary pads to female secondary school students across the local government area under the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) of Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu.

The exercise, held in commemoration of the International Day of the Girl Child, was aimed at promoting menstrual hygiene, preserving the dignity of the girl child and ensuring that menstrual health challenges do not hinder girls’ access to education.

The initiative forms part of the Renewed Hope Initiative’s efforts to improve the health and well-being of young girls by providing access to essential menstrual hygiene materials and raising awareness about proper menstrual health practices.

At the state level, the programme is supported by the Edo State First Lady, Mrs. Edesili Okpebholo, whose advocacy for the welfare, education and empowerment of women and girls complements the national initiative.

Mrs. Faith Imafidon’s participation in the exercise underscores the role of local government authorities in extending programmes designed to improve the welfare of women and children to communities at the grassroots.

During the outreach, beneficiaries were also sensitised to the importance of proper menstrual hygiene, personal care and maintaining confidence while pursuing their educational goals.

The council chairperson emphasised the need to create a supportive environment where girls can attend school and participate fully in academic activities without being disadvantaged by challenges associated with menstruation.

She acknowledged Senator Oluremi Tinubu for championing the initiative and commended Mrs. Edesili Okpebholo for supporting programmes aimed at improving the lives of women and girls in Edo State.

Members of the delegation who participated in coordinating the distribution exercise included the Chairperson’s Personal Assistant, Mrs. Abigail Ekunwe; Uhunmwode APC Woman Leader, Mrs. Rebecca Okunbor; the WDP Secretary, Mrs. Hope; and the Head of Widows in Uhunmwode, Mrs. Joyce.

The exercise also highlighted the importance of collaboration among the federal, state and local governments in addressing issues affecting the welfare and development of the girl child.

Beyond the distribution of sanitary pads, the programme drew attention to the need for sustained efforts to improve menstrual health education, promote school attendance and ensure that girls have access to the basic materials required to manage their menstrual health with dignity.

The outreach aligns with the grassroots development agenda of the Uhunmwode Local Government Council under the leadership of the Executive Chairman, Hon. Austin Imafidon (ISIWINA), particularly in advancing initiatives that support women, children and other vulnerable members of society.

The distribution exercise reinforced the message that menstrual hygiene is an important aspect of girls’ health, education and personal development, and that access to essential sanitary materials can help create a more supportive learning environment for female students.
