Oyarekwa Felix Unveils Akoko-Edo Industrial Development Bill, Targets Jobs, Investment, Economic Growth

Amb. (Dr.) Austine Oyarekwa Felix-Aderi has outlined plans to champion the proposed Akoko-Edo Industrial Development Bill, an initiative aimed at promoting industrialisation, creating employment opportunities and unlocking the economic potential of Akoko-Edo Constituency II in Edo State.

The proposed legislation is designed to establish a policy framework for industrial development, agro-processing, entrepreneurship and private-sector investment, with a focus on harnessing the area's natural resources to stimulate economic growth and improve the livelihoods of residents.

Felix-Aderi's proposal comes amid growing calls for policies that can translate the abundant natural and agricultural resources in many rural communities into sustainable economic opportunities through local processing, enterprise development and infrastructure expansion.

According to the proposal, the Bill would prioritise the establishment of industrial and agro-processing clusters to encourage production, reduce post-harvest losses, create markets for locally produced goods and provide opportunities for farmers, artisans and small business owners.

A major component of the initiative is youth empowerment through employment generation and technical skills development. The proposed framework seeks to encourage vocational training, technical education and partnerships with industries to equip young people with practical skills required in manufacturing, agro-processing and other productive sectors.

The Bill would also seek to support micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), which play important roles in local economic development. Through improved access to investment opportunities, business partnerships and supportive policies, the initiative aims to create an environment where small businesses can grow, employ more people and contribute to the constituency's economic base.

Another area of focus is attracting responsible private-sector investment. The proposed legislation would explore investment incentives and partnerships capable of encouraging businesses to establish operations in Akoko-Edo Constituency II, while ensuring that local communities benefit from the resulting economic activities.

Infrastructure development is also expected to feature prominently in the proposed framework. Reliable electricity, accessible roads, adequate water supply and improved digital connectivity are considered essential to supporting industrial activities, facilitating the movement of agricultural produce and connecting local businesses to wider markets.

The proposal further emphasises the development of local value chains to ensure that the benefits of industrialisation extend beyond major investors. By connecting farmers and raw-material suppliers with processors, manufacturers, distributors and retailers, the initiative seeks to promote a more inclusive economic system that allows more residents to participate in and benefit from commercial activities.

Environmental protection and community safeguards are equally identified as important considerations. The proposed approach recognises the need for industrial development to be pursued responsibly, with appropriate attention to environmental sustainability, community interests and the long-term welfare of residents.

If developed and enacted, the Bill could provide a legislative basis for coordinating industrial development priorities, encouraging public-private partnerships and establishing a more structured approach to economic development in the constituency. Its effectiveness, however, would depend on the final provisions of the legislation, stakeholder engagement, funding arrangements and implementation.

Felix-Aderi's industrial development proposal places economic diversification, job creation, skills acquisition and local enterprise at the centre of his legislative agenda for Akoko-Edo Constituency II.

The broader vision is to position the constituency as a centre for production, agro-processing, entrepreneurship and employment, enabling more locally generated wealth to remain within the community while creating opportunities for future generations.

As political discussions ahead of the 2027 general elections continue to bring development priorities into focus, the proposal introduces industrialisation as one of the policy issues that could shape conversations about the future of Akoko-Edo Constituency II.

Amb. (Dr.) Austine Oyarekwa Felix-Aderi is seeking election to represent Akoko-Edo Constituency II in the Edo State House of Assembly, with the proposed Akoko-Edo Industrial Development Bill forming part of his stated vision for the constituency.
