Leghemo Calls For Economic Opportunities, Sustainable Development In Southern Ijaw

Diepreye Abaye Leghemo (DAL), the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate for the Southern Ijaw Federal Constituency seat in the House of Representatives, has called for greater attention to economic opportunities, local enterprise and sustainable development in the area.

Leghemo said Southern Ijaw possessed enormous economic potential through its natural resources, agricultural activities, fishing communities, entrepreneurial spirit and youthful population, stressing the need to translate these assets into improved livelihoods for residents.

In a statement outlining his development vision for the constituency, the NDC candidate noted that the true measure of Southern Ijaw's wealth should not be limited to its available resources but should also reflect the opportunities accessible to its people and improvements in their living conditions.

He raised questions about how the constituency could better utilise its natural and human resources to create jobs, strengthen local businesses, equip young people with valuable skills and support women in building sustainable livelihoods.

According to him, development initiatives should be designed to recognise the strengths of local communities, encourage entrepreneurship, support productive economic activities and connect residents to opportunities that would improve their economic circumstances.

Leghemo emphasised the need to support fishermen in improving their livelihoods, assist farmers in increasing productivity, create opportunities for entrepreneurs to expand their businesses and equip young people with the skills required to participate in emerging sectors of the economy.

He said the development conversation in Southern Ijaw should focus not only on existing challenges but also on practical strategies for unlocking the constituency's economic potential.

The candidate added that his vision was to contribute to building a constituency where residents could better translate their talents, available resources and hard work into improved living standards.

He maintained that achieving sustainable development would require clearly defined priorities, purposeful representation and a collective commitment to creating opportunities for communities across Southern Ijaw.

“Southern Ijaw must not remain a place of enormous potential alone; we must work towards making it a place of greater opportunity, productivity and shared prosperity,” he said.

Leghemo called on residents to join efforts towards advancing the constituency's development, urging voters to support the NDC in the January 16, 2027 election for the Southern Ijaw Federal Constituency seat in the House of Representatives.
