Ikuli Appeals To Diri Not To Allow Turnah’s Alleged Ingratitude Discourage Him

Chief (Hon.) Wisdom Oniekpar Ikuli, JP, Technical Adviser to the Executive Governor of Bayelsa State on Media and Public Affairs, has appealed to Governor Douye Diri not to allow the controversy surrounding George Alabh Turnah to discourage him from sustaining his administration’s commitment to supporting young people.

Ikuli made the appeal in a statement dated October 30, 2026, following a video reportedly released by Turnah, in which he spoke about his role during the electoral process at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Collation Centre in Ogbia Town.

Reacting to the video, Ikuli faulted what he described as Turnah’s attempt to present himself as the sole individual who stood against alleged intimidation during the electoral process, arguing that electoral victories and political achievements are products of collective efforts rather than the contributions of one person.

He also expressed disappointment over Turnah’s public conduct, particularly against the backdrop of the controversies surrounding his past dealings with the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

According to Ikuli, he was initially among those who criticised the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over Turnah’s prosecution but subsequently changed his position after being confronted with documents detailing allegations of financial impropriety involving funds meant for youth empowerment and development programmes in the Niger Delta.

He specifically referenced alleged irregularities surrounding the Water Hyacinth project and other empowerment initiatives, claiming that funds running into billions of naira were involved.

Ikuli further recalled that Turnah’s arrest and prosecution generated considerable reactions among Niger Delta youths, particularly in Bayelsa, many of whom initially opposed the EFCC's action before details of the allegations became public.

He, however, maintained that Governor Diri demonstrated compassion by offering Turnah support during his difficult period, despite the controversies surrounding him.

The Bayelsa political commentator described Diri as a leader who had extended goodwill to young people, including those facing personal and professional challenges, adding that such gestures should not be repaid with hostility or public attacks.

Ikuli also praised the governor for what he described as the discipline and modesty of members of his immediate family, particularly his children, whom he said had refrained from using their father's political position to exert influence in government offices or seek undue advantages.

He contrasted this with what he described as the excesses associated with relatives of some former governors, insisting that Diri's family had demonstrated restraint and respect for public institutions.

According to him, the governor's leadership style reflects his commitment to personal discipline, responsible conduct and the separation of family interests from public administration.

Expressing concern over what he perceived as Turnah's recent criticisms of the governor, Ikuli alleged that Diri had previously extended substantial financial assistance to him for further studies abroad, but that the gesture had not been reciprocated with loyalty and appreciation.

He consequently urged the governor not to allow the controversy to overshadow his administration's achievements or weaken his commitment to youth development.

"As one of the beneficiaries of the benevolence and goodwill of the Governor, I wish to use this rare opportunity to humbly and passionately appeal to our God-sent Governor not to be discouraged by the actions of this ungrateful fellow," Ikuli said.

He added that many Bayelsans remained appreciative of the governor's development efforts and encouraged him to remain focused on delivering on his promises to the people.

Ikuli concluded by urging Diri to remain determined and committed to finishing his tenure strong, stressing that the alleged conduct of one individual should not diminish the governor's willingness to extend opportunities and support to other young people.
