Akoko-Edo Deserves Better, Austine Felix Calls For Accountable Leadership, Development

Dr. Austine Oyarekwa Felix, the National Democratic Party (NDP) candidate for Edo State House of Assembly, Akoko-Edo Constituency II, has called on the people of the constituency to demand accountable leadership, sustainable development and improved economic opportunities as they prepare for the 2027 general elections.

Felix, in a message to the people of Akoko-Edo, urged residents to place development, competence, transparency and the collective interests of the constituency above partisan politics, warning against the tendency to prioritise political loyalty over measurable results.

He said the time had come for the people to critically assess the quality of representation they receive and insist on leadership capable of translating the constituency's human and natural resources into tangible improvements in their living conditions.

According to him, Akoko-Edo possesses enormous potential in agriculture, mineral resources, cultural heritage and human capital, but the people must demand a more deliberate approach to transforming these advantages into employment, industrial growth and sustainable prosperity.

The NDP candidate stressed that the constituency deserved more than campaign promises, temporary political gestures and election-season engagements, insisting that public officeholders should be assessed based on their contributions to infrastructure, education, healthcare, economic development and the welfare of their constituents.

He called on the electorate to ask critical questions about the performance of their representatives, examine their records and demand practical solutions to the challenges confronting their communities.

Felix maintained that political criticism should be constructive and fact-based, adding that all political parties and candidates should be subjected to the same standards of accountability.

He said the objective should not be to discredit political opponents but to ensure that the people of Akoko-Edo receive responsible representation that prioritises their needs and aspirations.

Felix Unveils Development Agenda

Outlining his vision for Akoko-Edo Constituency II, Felix said his ambition was to ensure that the area's natural and human resources translated into better living conditions, greater economic opportunities and improved prospects for future generations.

He identified industrial development, youth empowerment, infrastructure, agriculture, transparent representation and inclusive governance as key priorities of his proposed legislative agenda.

On industrial development, the candidate pledged to advocate legislation and strategic partnerships capable of attracting responsible investments, encouraging local enterprise, promoting value addition and creating employment opportunities for residents.

He also emphasised the need to equip young people with vocational, entrepreneurial and digital skills to improve their employability and enable them to establish sustainable businesses.

Felix said effective representation must go beyond occupying a legislative seat, noting that elected representatives should actively pursue policies and interventions that address the needs of their constituents.

He pledged to advocate sustained investment in roads, electricity, potable water, education and healthcare, while supporting policies that would strengthen agricultural production and connect farmers and small businesses to finance, markets and processing facilities.

According to him, strengthening local enterprises and improving access to economic opportunities would help reduce unemployment, stimulate rural development and discourage the continued migration of young people in search of better prospects elsewhere.

Promises Regular Engagement With Constituents

On accountability, Felix promised to maintain regular communication with constituents through quarterly ward town hall meetings and transparent reports on his legislative activities, commitments and progress.

He said the proposed engagement mechanism would provide residents with opportunities to communicate their concerns, contribute ideas and monitor the performance of their representative.

The candidate further pledged to promote inclusive development by ensuring that women, young people, farmers, artisans and vulnerable households had a voice in decisions affecting their communities.

He acknowledged that the challenges facing the constituency could not be resolved overnight by one individual but argued that meaningful progress was possible through practical planning, effective legislation, strategic partnerships and consistent engagement with the people.

Felix urged voters not to surrender their democratic power to intimidation, political sentiments or the belief that change was impossible.

He described the ballot as a mandate entrusted to elected officials by the people, urging the electorate to evaluate candidates based on their competence, integrity, policy proposals and willingness to remain accountable after elections.

He also cautioned voters against exchanging their long-term interests for temporary benefits, calling instead for informed electoral decisions guided by the future of their children and the overall development of the constituency.

Calls for Peaceful Democratic Change

Felix emphasised that his appeal was not intended to promote hostility or deepen political divisions but to encourage political awareness, constructive engagement and peaceful democratic change.

He urged the people of Akoko-Edo to unite around common development goals, regardless of their political affiliations, stressing that the future of the constituency should take precedence over individual political ambitions.

He said Akoko-Edo needed a new approach to political representation, one that prioritised ideas, competence, integrity, accountability and measurable results.

The NDP candidate called on residents to support a development-oriented political culture in which elected officials would be judged by their contributions to the welfare of the people rather than campaign rhetoric.

He expressed optimism that the constituency could build a future in which young people had access to meaningful opportunities, farmers enjoyed better economic prospects, businesses flourished and communities attracted the investment needed to improve living standards.

Felix concluded by urging the electorate to support his candidacy under the NDP, describing his aspiration as an opportunity to advance a new direction for Akoko-Edo Constituency II.

His message centred on the need for a more accountable political system in which the people's interests, economic advancement and long-term development remain at the heart of governance.
