Rt. Hon. Blessing Sherriff Agbebaku has reiterated the importance of accessible, accountable and people-oriented leadership, stressing that the responsibility of public office holders to the people must continue beyond official engagements and working days.
Agbebaku made this known in his Friday reflection, where he highlighted the everyday struggles of ordinary Nigerians and the need for leaders to remain conscious of the challenges confronting the people they represent.
Reflecting on the realities of many households, he drew attention to parents struggling to provide for their families, mothers making sacrifices to keep their children in school and young graduates searching for employment opportunities.
According to him, behind every appeal for assistance is a human being whose concerns deserve attention, respect and genuine consideration.
He noted that requests from constituents, particularly appeals such as "Honourable, please remember us," should serve as constant reminders of the responsibilities that come with public office.
The lawmaker emphasised that public trust must be sustained through active listening, transparency in decision-making, fulfilment of commitments and accessibility, particularly when leaders are confronted with difficult conversations.
He also challenged public office holders to regularly assess their performance by asking whether they have made themselves accessible, followed through on promises and adequately addressed issues requiring their attention.
Beyond leadership accountability, Agbebaku called on citizens to embrace tolerance and mutual respect, noting that differences in political opinions should not create hostility among neighbours and members of the same community.
He maintained that despite political differences, citizens share common aspirations, including better opportunities for their children, dignity in their livelihoods and safer communities.
Expressing gratitude to God for the strength to continue serving, Agbebaku also appreciated those who offer encouragement and constructive criticism, describing honest feedback as an important part of reflection and responsible leadership.
He concluded by wishing Nigerians a peaceful weekend, expressing hope that it would bring renewed strength to those facing difficult circumstances and wisdom to everyone entrusted with positions of leadership.
The Friday message reinforces the need for public service to be measured not merely by official positions or public appearances, but by a genuine commitment to the welfare, dignity and expectations of the people.
