Rt. Hon. Blessing Sherriff Agbebaku has called on public office holders and political leaders to remain accessible, humble and responsive to the needs of ordinary citizens, stressing that the true essence of leadership lies in service rather than status.

Agbebaku, in a message reflecting on the responsibilities of public service, emphasised that occupying a position of authority should never make a leader inaccessible to the people whose interests they are entrusted to protect.

According to him, leaders must not become so important in their positions that ordinary people can no longer reach them or have their concerns heard.

He noted that behind every request for assistance is a human story that deserves attention, citing the struggles of parents seeking support for their children's education, graduates searching for employment opportunities and small business owners working tirelessly to sustain their livelihoods.

He stressed that such concerns should not be dismissed or treated as insignificant, adding that every citizen deserves to be treated with dignity, patience and respect, regardless of social standing or economic circumstances.

The lawmaker maintained that public service goes beyond political speeches, official engagements, public recognition and ceremonial appearances. Rather, it demands genuine commitment to listening to the people, communicating honestly and making deliberate efforts to fulfil promises.

He acknowledged that no leader could resolve every challenge confronting the people within a day, but insisted that accessibility, honest communication and a willingness to provide direction could make a significant difference in the lives of citizens.

Agbebaku further observed that even when assistance cannot be provided immediately, people should leave interactions with public office holders feeling respected, heard and assured that their concerns matter.

He also encouraged individuals occupying positions of influence to use their connections and opportunities to create pathways for others, particularly through recommendations, mentorship, encouragement and support for qualified individuals seeking opportunities.

According to him, acts of kindness and assistance extended to people today could produce positive outcomes far beyond what anyone might immediately imagine, as beneficiaries may eventually become instruments of opportunity for others.

The message reinforces an important principle of democratic leadership: public office is a position of responsibility, not a licence for superiority. The value of leadership should not be measured solely by the authority attached to an office but also by the lives touched, opportunities created and challenges addressed.

Agbebaku called for greater humility, compassion and faithfulness in service, praying for the wisdom to lead, the humility to listen and the courage to serve sincerely.

He concluded by inviting members of the public to share memorable acts of kindness they had received, encouraging a wider conversation about compassion, accessibility and the responsibility to make life better for others.
