Yelwata Massacre: OSR Condemns Attack On Opposition Convoy, Demands Probe
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate for the Oredo Federal Constituency in the 2027 House of Representatives election, Hon. Osazee Richard, popularly known as OSR, has condemned the reported attack and obstruction of an opposition presidential candidate's convoy while travelling to Benue State for a condolence visit to families affected by the recent Yelwata massacre.
Richard described the incident as unacceptable in a democratic society and called on the Federal Government and relevant security agencies to investigate the circumstances surrounding the reported blockade and ensure that anyone found culpable is brought to justice.
The ADC candidate said the reported barricading of roads leading into Benue State amounted to an infringement on citizens' constitutional rights to freedom of movement and peaceful association.
He referenced Sections 40 and 41(1) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended, which provide for the right to peaceful assembly and association and the right to freedom of movement throughout Nigeria.
Richard urged the security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and prosecute those found responsible, stressing that accountability was necessary to prevent similar incidents in the future.
He expressed concern that such incidents could have wider implications for democratic participation, particularly as political activities and engagements increase ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to him, opposition leaders and chieftains of the ADC would be visiting different states across the country in the coming weeks, and he stressed the need for political actors and citizens to be able to move freely and engage with communities without intimidation or obstruction.
Richard also appealed to the people of Benue State to remain calm and steadfast, expressing confidence that the situation would be resolved and that peace and democratic values would prevail.
He reiterated his call for all relevant authorities to uphold the rule of law and protect the fundamental rights of every Nigerian, regardless of political affiliation.
