Leghemo Engages Amassoma Women, Pledges People-Centred Representation For Southern Ijaw
Diepreye Abaye Leghemo, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) House of Representatives candidate for Southern Ijaw Federal Constituency, has engaged women in Amassoma as part of his ongoing consultations across the constituency ahead of the 2027 general elections.
During a town hall meeting with women from the community, Leghemo said the engagement was an opportunity to listen directly to their concerns, aspirations and expectations and to better understand the issues affecting families and communities across Southern Ijaw.
He emphasised the importance of women in community development, noting that the wellbeing of families and communities is closely linked to the empowerment and participation of women in economic and social affairs.
Leghemo assured the participants that, if elected to the House of Representatives, he would pursue what he described as responsible, accessible and people-centred representation, with particular attention to issues affecting women, young people and vulnerable communities.
He identified education, economic opportunities, infrastructure, healthcare and environmental challenges as areas requiring sustained advocacy and legislative attention. He also pledged to support initiatives aimed at improving opportunities for women and young people across the constituency.
The issues raised during the engagement come against the backdrop of longstanding development challenges in Southern Ijaw. Official legislative records have documented concerns over limited road connectivity across the constituency, while Amassoma has also faced recurring flooding and shoreline erosion. The National Assembly has previously considered motions concerning the completion of the Amassoma shoreline protection project.
In June 2024, the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) also reaffirmed its commitment to completing the Amassoma shoreline protection project, highlighting the continuing importance of environmental protection and infrastructure development in the community.
More recently, a Federal Ministry of Information report highlighted the completion of a solar-powered borehole and water-storage facility in Amassoma as part of ongoing infrastructure interventions in Southern Ijaw.
Leghemo said his consultations would continue across Southern Ijaw, stressing that effective representation should begin with listening to the people and understanding their priorities.
“The journey to a stronger Southern Ijaw must be a collective one. I will continue to listen, consult and engage our people because true representation begins with understanding the people you seek to represent,” he said.
He called for continued engagement with communities as the 2027 election approaches and expressed his commitment to building what he described as a stronger voice for Southern Ijaw at the National Assembly.
Leghemo is seeking the mandate to represent the Southern Ijaw Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives on the platform of the NDC at the January 2027 election.
