2027: Ado-Iliyasu Pledges FCT Self-Rule, More Representation For Residents
The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Senate in the 2027 general elections, Dr. Ibrahim Ado Iliyasu Kwali, has unveiled a legislative agenda focused on greater political inclusion, grassroots representation and improved governance for residents of the nation’s capital.
Dr. Iliyasu, a World-Class Chartered Arbitrator and President of the North Central People’s Development Initiative, said his ambition is driven by the desire to give residents of the FCT a stronger voice in decisions affecting their communities.
He said, if elected to the 11th National Assembly, he would pursue two major legislative initiatives — the FCT Legislative Assembly Establishment Bill and the FCT Constituency Delineation Bill.
According to him, the proposed FCT Legislative Assembly would seek to provide residents with a stronger institutional platform to participate in legislation and governance, while the constituency delineation proposal would seek additional representation for the rapidly growing population of the territory.
Dr. Iliyasu argued that the expansion of the FCT and the growth of communities beyond the city centre require a representation structure capable of adequately reflecting the interests and aspirations of residents.
He specifically highlighted communities across Abuja South, including Abaji, Gwagwalada, Kuje and Kwali, while also identifying Bwari and the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) as important parts of the broader representation debate.
The NDC candidate has consistently advocated equity in the rotation of the FCT Senate seat, particularly arguing that Abuja South should have a fair opportunity to produce the territory’s senator.
His campaign has also focused on healthcare, women’s welfare, youth empowerment, education, rural infrastructure, water supply, electricity and improved access to economic opportunities across the six Area Councils.
Beyond legislation, Dr. Iliyasu has been taking his campaign message to communities through his Community-to-Community mobilisation initiative, which seeks to engage residents directly and identify challenges at the grassroots.
He has maintained that effective governance must involve listening to citizens and working with communities to develop solutions to their problems.
On the political leadership backing his campaign, the statement said:
“With the backing of our visionary leaders: H.E. Peter Obi — the incoming President; H.E. Sen. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso — the Nationalist and incoming Vice President; H.E. Sen. Henry Seriake Dickson — the National Leader and Supreme Leader, our promise to FCT is a FAIT ACCOMPLI.”
The descriptions of the three political figures as “incoming President,” “incoming Vice President” and “Supreme Leader” represent the campaign’s political positioning ahead of the 2027 elections.
Dr. Iliyasu said his vision goes beyond winning an election, stressing that the ultimate objective is to build an FCT where residents have a greater say in governance and where development is distributed more equitably.
He urged FCT residents to support his “Fresh Air” agenda and described the 2027 election as an opportunity for citizens to demand a new approach to representation.
“I will be your voice, your eyes and your hands in the 11th Senate,” he said.
He further called on residents to remain united and participate actively in the democratic process, promising to pursue legislative reforms and policies aimed at strengthening representation and improving governance across the territory.
“Give FCT the power we deserve,” he added.
