Osun Election: NDC Edo South Candidate Hails Adeleke’s Victory, Says Outcome Sends Strong Signal Ahead Of 2027
The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate for Edo South Senatorial District in the 2027 general election, Comrade (Mrs.) Osayuki Epelle-Asemota, has congratulated Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, on his victory in the state's 2026 governorship election, describing the outcome as a strong affirmation of the power of the people and an important signal ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a congratulatory message, Epelle-Asemota said the outcome of the Osun governorship election demonstrated that democracy must remain centred on the will of the people and that citizens must be allowed to freely determine who leads them.
She described Adeleke's victory as more than an electoral triumph, saying it represented a reaffirmation that the people's votes and collective choices can shape the direction of governance and determine the future of their state.
According to her, the Osun election carries significance beyond the state, particularly as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections.
"As we look ahead to the 2027 General Election, this moment sends an important signal: the people are watching, the people are participating, and the power of the ballot remains one of the strongest instruments for democratic change," she said.
Epelle-Asemota called for credible, transparent and peaceful elections in which voters are able to freely exercise their constitutional rights without intimidation or interference.
She also stressed the importance of respecting the mandate freely given by the electorate, promoting accountable leadership and building a political culture in which every vote counts.
Her position echoes concerns that have featured prominently in the build-up to the Osun election. Governor Adeleke had repeatedly called for the protection of voters' rights and insisted that the August 15 election should reflect the wishes of the people. He had described credible elections as essential to strengthening Nigeria's democratic system.
The Osun governorship contest also attracted national attention as one of the major elections preceding the 2027 general elections. Candidates and stakeholders signed a peace accord ahead of the poll, committing themselves to a peaceful electoral process.
For Epelle-Asemota, the significance of the Osun outcome lies in its potential to strengthen citizens' confidence in democratic participation and encourage Nigerians to take a more active role in determining the leadership of the country.
She said the lesson from Osun should be that political leaders must remain accountable to the people, while citizens must remain vigilant in protecting the integrity of the democratic process.
"May this victory strengthen the confidence of Nigerians in the democratic process and inspire greater participation, vigilance and commitment to building a nation where leadership truly reflects the choice and aspirations of the people," she stated.
The NDC Edo South candidate further congratulated Governor Adeleke and the people of Osun State, praying that the victory would translate into renewed commitment to good governance and improved development across the state.
Epelle-Asemota has in recent weeks positioned herself as an advocate for democratic participation, party unity and people-centred representation. The NDC has also maintained that she remains its duly sponsored candidate for the Edo South Senatorial District following a disputed publication of candidates' particulars by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
She urged Nigerians to view the Osun election as a reminder that democracy is ultimately about the people and their right to choose their leaders.
"Congratulations once again, Your Excellency, Governor Ademola Adeleke, Governor of Osun State," she said.
