NDC Unveils Omoruyi As Candidate For Egor/Ikpoba-Okha Federal Constituency
The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has formally unveiled Hon. Murphy Osaro Omoruyi as its candidate for the Egor/Ikpoba-Okha Federal Constituency ahead of the 2027 general elections, setting the stage for another phase in the lawmaker's political journey and his bid to retain his seat in the House of Representatives.
The unveiling ceremony, held on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, at Ehizua Event Centre, 83 Airport Road, Benin City, brought together party leaders, political stakeholders, supporters and residents from different parts of the constituency.
The event marked the formal presentation of Omoruyi as the NDC's standard-bearer for the constituency and provided an opportunity for party members to rally behind his candidacy as preparations begin for the 2027 elections.
Omoruyi, who currently represents Egor/Ikpoba-Okha in the 10th National Assembly, first won the federal constituency in the 2023 general election on the platform of the Labour Party. INEC's official list of elected members from the 2023 election identifies Omoruyi as the elected representative for Egor/Ikpoba-Okha.
His emergence as the NDC candidate comes after a political journey that has seen him move from the Labour Party to the African Democratic Congress before subsequently joining the NDC.
Since his election to the National Assembly, Omoruyi has been involved in legislative proceedings on issues affecting his constituency and the wider Nigerian public.
Among the bills associated with him is the proposed legislation seeking to establish a Federal Institute of Technology in Ikpoba-Okha, Edo State. The bill, listed as HB.636, received first reading in the House of Representatives in October 2023 and subsequently progressed to second reading.
The proposed institution is intended to promote technical education, research, innovation and skills development, with its sponsor arguing that it could create opportunities for young people while contributing to technological and economic development in the area.
Omoruyi has also raised issues of public importance on the floor of the House. In October 2023, for instance, he brought before the House the matter of the deplorable living conditions of officers of the Nigeria Police Force, leading to consideration of the issue as a matter of urgent public importance.
Education has also featured prominently in Omoruyi's constituency interventions.
In November 2024, he awarded a ₦10 million scholarship to 120 high-performing students from public secondary schools in Egor and Ikpoba-Okha. The beneficiaries were selected from SS3 students in public schools across the two local government areas, with the scholarship designed to assist them with textbooks and other academic materials ahead of their WAEC and NECO examinations.
The initiative formed part of an annual scholarship programme established by the lawmaker for students in public secondary schools within the constituency. Reports on the programme indicate that it covers educational materials and examination-related needs, reflecting Omoruyi's stated emphasis on education as a tool for human-capital development.
Beyond the National Assembly, the lawmaker's supporters have continued to point to his constituency empowerment programmes as another major component of his representation.
Previous reports on his activities indicate that he has supported market women through financial grants and organised training programmes aimed at strengthening their businesses. One reported intervention involved a ₦10 million grant shared among 200 market women, with each beneficiary receiving ₦50,000.
Other constituency initiatives highlighted by supporters include skills acquisition, youth empowerment and interventions designed to improve economic opportunities for residents.
Infrastructure and Community Development
Omoruyi's constituency record has also included interventions in community infrastructure, particularly solar-powered street lighting.
A 2024 assessment of his first year in office reported the installation of solar-powered streetlights across major streets in Egor and Ikpoba-Okha, with the intervention aimed at improving visibility and security within communities.
Supporters also cite other interventions, including electricity and community development projects, as evidence of an approach to representation that combines legislative duties with direct engagement at the grassroots.
The NDC unveiling therefore represents a new political chapter for Omoruyi as he seeks another mandate from the people of Egor and Ikpoba-Okha.
Addressing supporters through his campaign message, the candidate pledged to pursue purposeful, responsive and people-centred representation, with the interests and welfare of constituents remaining central to his legislative agenda.
He stressed the importance of accountability, development, effective representation and inclusive leadership, while calling for unity and collective action among the people of the constituency.
For his supporters, the 2027 contest is not simply about another election but an opportunity to consolidate what they describe as an emerging record of legislative advocacy, education support, empowerment and grassroots development.
The NDC has consequently begun positioning Omoruyi's candidacy around continuity, experience and people-focused representation as the political activities leading to the 2027 general elections gather momentum.
With the formal unveiling now completed, attention will shift to the mobilisation of party structures, engagement with constituents and the presentation of the candidate's agenda to voters across Egor and Ikpoba-Okha Federal Constituency.
