Gov. Diri Is One Of Nigeria’s Outstanding Proponents Of Contemporary Democracy — Ikuli
The Technical Adviser to the Bayelsa State Governor on Media and Public Affairs, Hon. Wisdom Oniekpar Ikuli, has described Governor Douye Diri as one of the most outstanding proponents of contemporary democracy in Nigeria, urging Bayelsans and other Nigerians to respect both the office and person of the governor.
Ikuli made the remarks in a statement on Monday, August 18, 2026, while highlighting what he described as Governor Diri’s humility, accessibility, compassion and commitment to democratic governance in Bayelsa State.
According to him, Bayelsans should not have short memories, noting that previous administrations in the state were accused of using the powers of government to deal harshly with perceived political opponents.
He said the emergence of Governor Diri represented a significant departure from what he described as past experiences of “draconian and dictatorial leadership,” stressing that the governor had demonstrated a leadership style anchored on humility, accessibility and responsiveness.
“Almighty God gave us a leader that is humble, compassionate and very accessible. He gave us a governor that is unassuming, a governor that has a listening ear and one who is very proactive, with a heart of gold,” Ikuli stated.
He argued that Governor Diri’s accommodating disposition should not be mistaken for weakness, urging those criticising the administration to acknowledge what he described as its achievements across the state.
The governor’s aide particularly pointed to the transformation of Bayelsa’s road infrastructure, recalling that the state’s difficult terrain had historically been cited as a major reason for its infrastructure challenges.
Ikuli said the narrative had changed under the present administration, claiming that a state once largely dependent on waterways and boats for transportation had witnessed significant expansion in its network of motorable roads.
He maintained that the achievements of the administration were evidence that the state’s difficult terrain could be overcome through purposeful leadership, planning and sustained investment.
“People deceived Bayelsans with the story and excuses of difficult terrain as reasons for gross underdevelopment of the state under their watch, but today, the story has changed,” he said.
Ikuli therefore urged critics of the administration to objectively assess the impact of the Governor Diri-led Prosperity Administration rather than dismissing its accomplishments.
He described those who consistently refused to acknowledge the administration’s achievements as “retrogressive elements,” calling on them to reconsider their positions and recognise what he described as the positive transformation taking place across Bayelsa State.
He reaffirmed his confidence in Governor Diri’s leadership, saying the administration remained committed to delivering development and improving the quality of life of the people of Bayelsa State.
