National Security Summit: Iliyasu Urges Stronger Protection Of Human Rights, Commends Security Agencies
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) senatorial hopeful of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Ibrahim Ado Iliyasu, has called for greater protection of human rights, improved welfare for security personnel, and stronger collaboration between security agencies and citizens to enhance national peace and stability.
Dr. Iliyasu, who also serves as the FCT Director of the International Human Rights Protection Service (IHRPS)—an international human rights organisation headquartered in the United States—made the call while addressing members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) at the National Security Summit in Abuja.
Speaking on the importance of protecting the rights of both security personnel and civilians, he stressed that timely payment of salaries, access to opportunities, and adequate welfare are essential to boosting morale and strengthening national security.
He noted that every Nigerian, regardless of status, deserves justice, dignity, and protection under the law, adding that respect for human rights remains fundamental to sustainable peace and national development.
Dr. Iliyasu also commended Nigeria's security agencies, particularly the Armed Forces, for what he described as their growing commitment to professionalism and compliance with human rights standards during security operations.
According to him, the progress made by security institutions in promoting accountability and lawful conduct has earned recognition from both local and international observers, while contributing to improved public confidence in security operations.
The human rights advocate highlighted the role of the International Human Rights Protection Service in promoting justice, defending victims of human rights violations, and supporting institutions in building a culture of accountability and respect for the rule of law.
He urged members of the Civilian Joint Task Force and other stakeholders to continue working closely with security agencies, government institutions, and civil society organisations to promote peace, safeguard fundamental rights, and strengthen national unity.
Dr. Iliyasu reaffirmed his commitment to advancing policies that protect the rights and welfare of all Nigerians, noting that if elected to represent the Federal Capital Territory in the Senate in 2027, he would champion legislation aimed at improving security, enhancing citizens' welfare, and strengthening institutions responsible for protecting human rights.
He maintained that lasting peace and development can only be achieved when justice, accountability, and respect for human dignity remain at the centre of governance.
