Diri Reaffirms Commitment To Advancing Women's Participation In Politics
Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, has reiterated his administration's commitment to promoting women's participation in politics and governance, emphasizing the need for competent female leaders to drive societal development.
The governor made the pledge on Thursday in Yenagoa during a reception held to celebrate the 60th birthday of the member representing Sagbama Constituency III in the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Ebizi Ndiomu-Brown.
Represented by his deputy, Peter Akpe, Governor Diri acknowledged the critical role women play in nation-building and assured that his administration would continue to support initiatives aimed at increasing female representation in politics and leadership.
He, however, urged women across the country to put forward capable and qualified candidates who can compete effectively and make meaningful contributions to governance and national development.
"As a government, we will continue to identify with the advocacy and other efforts encouraging women to come into politics. But I want to use this opportunity to encourage women to present their best," he said.
"We need competent women like Ebizi Brown who can do the job—women who can deliver and move our society forward. Women like her are rare to find. Her track record speaks for itself, and I believe she will continue to serve with distinction."
Earlier at a thanksgiving service held at the Divine Grace Model Parish of the Redeemed Christian Church of God in Kpansia, Yenagoa, Dr. Akpe delivered a sermon titled "From Strength to Strength," describing Mrs. Ndiomu-Brown as an embodiment of God's grace.
Drawing from several biblical passages, including Isaiah 40:31, the deputy governor encouraged Christians to depend on God as the ultimate source of strength, noting that divine renewal is essential for overcoming life's challenges and fulfilling impactful assignments.
He described attaining the age of 60 as a remarkable milestone and commended the celebrant for returning thanks to God, praying for continued good health, wisdom, and greater accomplishments.
Chairman of the occasion, Victor Ombu, praised Mrs. Ndiomu-Brown for upholding the cherished values of her family and making her parents—her mother, Mrs. Grace Ndiomu, and her late father, Major General Charles Ndiomu—proud through her public service.
In her remarks, Mrs. Ndiomu-Brown expressed gratitude to Governor Diri, Deputy Governor Peter Akpe, members of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, friends, colleagues, and both her parental and marital families for celebrating the milestone with her.
The event attracted several prominent personalities, including the Speaker of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Abraham Ingobere; the state's Chief Judge, Matilda Ayemieye; President of Azikel Group, Azibapu Eruani; Chairman of the Governing Board of the Niger Delta Development Commission, Chiedu Ebie; as well as former Deputy Governor of Rivers State, Gabriel Toby, and other political leaders, traditional rulers, government officials, and dignitaries.
