Sese’s Agricultural Reforms Driving Bayelsa Towards Food Security

The agricultural sector in Bayelsa State has witnessed remarkable transformation through the innovative leadership and strategic initiatives of the Honourable Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Prof. Beke Tuboukiye Sese.

Under the Prosperity Administration of Governor Douye Diri, Prof. Sese has continued to implement policies and programmes aimed at empowering farmers, boosting agricultural production, and strengthening food security across the state.

One of the major interventions under his leadership is the introduction of the ₦200 million Monthly Prosperity Farmers Grant Scheme, which provides financial assistance to farmers to expand their activities, improve productivity, and enhance their livelihoods.

The Commissioner has also championed the distribution of improved FARO 71 and FARO 72 rice seeds, alongside essential farm inputs, to support local rice production and encourage more Bayelsans to embrace agriculture.

Through strategic partnerships and farmer-focused initiatives, the Ministry has facilitated the off-take of locally produced rice paddies, ensuring that farmers have access to reliable markets while encouraging increased cultivation.

The distribution of agricultural equipment and inputs, including pumping machines, knapsack sprayers, herbicides, nutrients, and other farming tools, has further strengthened the capacity of farmer cooperatives across the state.

Prof. Sese’s administration has also prioritised the development of rice farming clusters in communities such as Peremabiri, Ekowe, and Ikoromogbene, while the remodelling of the State Rice Processing Mill along Imiringi Road is expected to improve processing capacity, create jobs, and add value to locally produced agricultural products.

The Ministry’s collaboration with major private sector investors, including the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with the Dangote Group for large-scale rice production, reflects the government’s commitment to attracting investment into the agricultural sector.

Other notable achievements include the establishment of demonstration farms for yam, pepper, tomato, coconut, and rice production, providing platforms for farmers to learn modern agricultural techniques and improve yields.

The distribution of over 20,000 improved TME 419 cassava stems to farmers across Bayelsa has also contributed significantly to cassava production and food sufficiency efforts.

Beyond agricultural interventions, Prof. Sese has continued to promote peaceful communities, farmer engagement, and partnerships with cooperatives, traditional institutions, and development organisations as key drivers of sustainable agricultural development.

Observers have described these initiatives as clear evidence of a renewed commitment towards agricultural mechanisation, value addition, youth participation, job creation, and the industrialisation of agriculture in Bayelsa State.

With the continued support of Governor Douye Diri’s Prosperity Administration, the agricultural sector is expected to remain a major pillar of economic growth, food security, and sustainable development in the state.

Prof. Beke Tuboukiye Sese’s leadership at the Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources continues to receive commendation as Bayelsa advances towards becoming a stronger agricultural hub in Nigeria.
