Oborevwori Resolves DELSUTH Industrial Crisis, Orders Comprehensive Hospital Revamp
Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has intervened in the industrial dispute at the Delta State University Teaching Hospital (DELSUTH), Oghara, bringing the crisis under control while directing immediate measures to tackle the institution's longstanding infrastructural and power challenges.
The intervention followed a closed-door meeting between the governor and the management of the state's premier teaching hospital on Monday.
Speaking with journalists after the meeting in Asaba, the Chief Medical Director of DELSUTH, Prof. Harrison Abedi, expressed appreciation to Governor Oborevwori for his prompt intervention, describing it as a timely move that has restored confidence among the hospital's management and workforce.
According to Prof. Abedi, the governor personally convened the meeting and successfully resolved the issues that triggered the industrial action by workers at the hospital.
He added that the governor also addressed several critical operational challenges confronting the institution, particularly the prolonged power outage that has disrupted healthcare services and water supply over the past two weeks.
Prof. Abedi disclosed that the state government had already awarded a contract for the restoration of stable electricity to the hospital and that the Ministry of Energy had commenced implementation of the project.
He revealed that a new high-tension transformer, which will provide DELSUTH with a dedicated 33kV power line, has been procured and is currently being transported from Lagos by the contractor for installation.
"The governor has assured us that the power problem will soon become a thing of the past. We are grateful that the Ministry of Energy has swung into action, and we expect the transformer to arrive very soon," he said.
Beyond resolving the immediate power challenge, Prof. Abedi said Governor Oborevwori directed the hospital's management to work closely with the Commissioner for Health to embark on a comprehensive rehabilitation and modernization of the teaching hospital.
He noted that the planned overhaul would address the institution's ageing infrastructure and significantly enhance healthcare service delivery across the state.
Expressing optimism over the outcome of the governor's intervention, the Chief Medical Director said he expects the striking unions to reconsider their position and suspend the industrial action.
"We believe the unions will reconsider their position, and we are hopeful that the strike will be called off soon. Once that happens, normal services will resume immediately, and DELSUTH will return to full operation," he stated.
Prof. Abedi commended Governor Oborevwori for his commitment to strengthening Delta State's healthcare system, describing the intervention as a demonstration of responsive, proactive and people-centred leadership.
