Tinubu Urges Peace, Unity As APC Begins Nationwide Primaries

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to uphold peace, fairness, and unity as the party commences its nationwide primary elections ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a statement issued from the State House on Thursday, the President described the commencement of the primaries as a historic moment for the ruling party, noting that the APC was preparing for its fourth election cycle since its formation.

Tinubu expressed pride in the growth and resilience of the party, saying the APC was founded on the principles of progressive politics, consensus democracy, selflessness, and sacrifice.

According to him, the primaries, which begin with the House of Representatives contests and will culminate in the presidential primary on May 25, 2026, are not just exercises to elect candidates but a test of the party’s unity and strength.
The President commended efforts by party leaders at different levels to adopt consensus arrangements in line with the Electoral Act 2026 and the APC constitution, describing the move as a strategy capable of reducing rancour and strengthening party cohesion.

He, however, stressed that where consensus fails, party members must conduct themselves peacefully and embrace the spirit of sportsmanship throughout the exercise.

“Every contest will produce winners and losers, but the ultimate goal is the success and unity of the party,” he stated, urging victorious aspirants not to gloat and those who lose to accept outcomes in good faith while preparing for future opportunities.

Tinubu also advised party leaders and elected officials to reach out to unsuccessful aspirants and avoid divisive politics, insisting that politics should not be treated as a “do-or-die affair.”

The President further charged governors, party executives, and stakeholders to ensure fairness and provide all aspirants with a level playing field.

On inclusion, Tinubu appealed to party members to give greater consideration to women and youths during the primaries, describing them as critical demographics whose participation must not be sidelined.

He also called on the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to remain professional and focus strictly on maintaining peace and order during the exercise.

The President wished all aspirants success and expressed optimism that the APC would emerge stronger and more united ahead of the general elections.
