Peter Obi Salutes Nigerian Nurses, Reaffirms Commitment To Health Sector Reform On World Nurses Day

Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has paid glowing tribute to Nigerian nurses and midwives in commemoration of the 2026 World Nurses Day celebration, describing them as the “heart of the nation’s health sector.”

In a goodwill message issued on Tuesday, Obi praised nurses and midwives across the country for their dedication, sacrifice, resilience, and invaluable contributions to healthcare delivery despite challenging working conditions.

According to him, Nigerian nurses continue to play critical roles in sustaining the nation’s healthcare system, often working under difficult circumstances marked by physical and mental stress, inadequate equipment, poor working environments, and high patient-to-nurse ratios.
Obi noted that his longstanding commitment to human and national development has driven his support for schools and colleges of nursing and midwifery across the country, stressing that investing in healthcare professionals remains vital to national progress.

He expressed appreciation to nurses for their selfless service to humanity and encouraged them not to relent in their efforts toward saving lives and improving healthcare outcomes.

The former Anambra State governor also commended Nigerian nurses in the diaspora for their outstanding achievements on the global stage, noting that many have distinguished themselves in clinical practice, research, and healthcare innovation while projecting Nigeria positively before the international community.
Obi assured nurses that a future government committed to national development would prioritize their welfare, education, and professional training to ensure they remain globally competitive.

He reaffirmed his vision of building a “New Nigeria” where the sacrifices and hard work of healthcare professionals would be adequately recognized and rewarded.

“Happy World Nurses Day to you all,” Obi stated, adding that “A New Nigeria is POssible.”
