Nwifuru’s Foreign Scholarship Scheme Transforming Ebonyi’s Future — Oketa
The foreign scholarship programme initiated by the Governor of Ebonyi State, Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, has been described as a transformative investment in human capital capable of reshaping the future of the state and generations to come.
Special Assistant to the Governor on New Media, Leo Ekene Oketa, stated this in a statement issued on Tuesday, noting that the initiative had continued to attract widespread commendation because of its far-reaching impact on youths and families across the state.
According to him, more than 300 Ebonyi indigenes are currently pursuing fully funded Master’s and PhD programmes in the United Kingdom under the scheme, while over 500 others are studying in various universities across Nigeria through the same educational intervention.
He explained that the programme was not loan-based or partially funded, but a comprehensive government-sponsored initiative aimed at preparing Ebonyi youths for global relevance in critical sectors of the modern economy.
Oketa noted that beneficiaries are studying courses such as Data Science, Cybersecurity, Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Technology and other health-related disciplines considered vital for future economic growth and development.
He said the initiative demonstrated Governor Nwifuru’s commitment to investing in human capital development rather than focusing solely on physical infrastructure.
“This is not politics as usual. This is leadership thinking beyond roads and buildings into the most valuable infrastructure any society can possess — human capital,” he stated.
The governor’s aide further disclosed that the impact of the scholarship programme was already being felt, as some beneficiaries had begun supporting their families financially while studying abroad, while others progressing from Master’s to doctorate degrees had recorded remarkable academic achievements.
He maintained that the programme deserved sustained public attention because of its capacity to restore hope to families and create a new generation of globally exposed professionals capable of contributing to governance, innovation and industrial development in Ebonyi State.
Citing former Ebonyi State Governor, Martin Elechi, Oketa recalled the saying that repeated emphasis on noble causes helps to institutionalise them in society.
He argued that consistently celebrating impactful governance would inspire future leaders to prioritise education and empowerment while encouraging young people to believe in the possibilities of excellence through purposeful leadership.
Oketa described the scholarship initiative as a rare and strategic intervention, especially in the face of prevailing economic challenges, adding that it reflected courage, planning and a long-term vision for the state’s development.
He stressed that the programme represented “a generational investment” that would strengthen the intellectual backbone of Ebonyi State for years to come.
