Peter Obi Emerges Sole Presidential Aspirant For NDC Ahead Of 2027
Peter Obi has emerged as the sole presidential aspirant of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the 2027 general election, following the close of the party’s sale of Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms.
Party sources confirmed that the NDC officially closed the sale of presidential nomination forms on Sunday, May 17, 2026, at exactly 6:00 p.m., with Obi reportedly being the only aspirant to purchase the forms before the deadline.
Speaking on the development, the NDC National Secretary, Ikenna Morgan Enekweizu, stated that the window for presidential aspirants has now been officially closed, adding that no further extension would be granted for the presidential race.
According to the party’s timetable, screening of aspirants who purchased and completed their forms will take place between May 19 and May 26, 2026, while the collection and return of nomination forms for cleared aspirants is scheduled for May 20 to May 26.
The party, however, extended the deadline for the sale and submission of forms for governorship, Senate, House of Representatives, and State Assembly positions to midnight on May 24, 2026.
Obi’s emergence as the lone presidential aspirant positions him strongly to become the party’s consensus presidential flag bearer ahead of the 2027 election.
The former Anambra State governor recently defected from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the NDC, following the collapse of the earlier ADC-led opposition coalition.
Meanwhile, the NDC has reportedly zoned its presidential ticket to the South and the vice-presidential slot to the North, fueling speculations that Rabiu Kwankwaso could emerge as Obi’s running mate for the 2027 presidential election.
Party officials insist that the presidential nomination process has now been concluded, with no plans for an additional extension.
