Nwifuru’s Healthcare Revolution Transforms Ebonyi Sector In Three Years
Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru’s administration has continued to record significant milestones in the transformation of the healthcare sector in Ebonyi State through massive investments in infrastructure, manpower development, emergency response systems, medical education, and public health services.
Within three years in office, the administration has embarked on wide-ranging reforms aimed at repositioning healthcare delivery across the State, with interventions extending from tertiary institutions and specialist hospitals to primary healthcare centres and rural communities.
One of the major highlights of the administration’s achievements is the aggressive recruitment of healthcare personnel to strengthen service delivery. No fewer than 195 medical professionals were employed into the State health system, while an additional 2,144 ad hoc nurses, midwives, community health extension workers, junior community health workers, and auxiliary nurses were recruited into Primary Healthcare Centres across the State.
The recruitment drive has significantly improved manpower capacity and expanded access to essential healthcare services, particularly in rural communities.
In a bid to improve the welfare and productivity of healthcare workers, the State Government procured and distributed Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) to medical doctors working in public hospitals. Doctors’ quarters in general hospitals across the State were also renovated, while call rooms were fully furnished to provide more conducive working conditions for medical personnel.
The administration equally invested heavily in healthcare infrastructure and equipment procurement. Billions of naira were committed to the purchase of medical equipment and consumables to improve diagnostic, treatment, and emergency response capabilities in public hospitals.
To strengthen emergency medical services, ambulances were procured and distributed to general hospitals across the State, while the government established the Emergency Medical Services and Ambulance System to improve coordination and response to urgent medical situations.
In another major reform initiative, Governor Nwifuru approved the establishment of the Drugs and Medical Commodities Management Agency to ensure effective coordination, availability, and accountability in the management of medical supplies across health institutions in the State.
The administration also demonstrated commitment to affordable healthcare by enrolling all civil and public servants into the health insurance scheme. In addition, the government paid hospital bills for indigent patients as part of efforts to reduce the financial burden of healthcare on vulnerable citizens.
In the area of disease control and public health management, the government approved the solarization of the vaccine cold room to improve vaccine preservation and strengthen immunization programmes. Funding was equally approved for the repair of the RT-PCR machine used for Lassa Fever diagnosis to enhance the State’s response to infectious disease outbreaks.
To sanitize the healthcare environment and protect residents from unsafe practices, the administration constituted an Anti-Quackery Committee tasked with identifying and shutting down illegal and unlicensed medical centres operating within the State.
Significant progress has also been recorded in health infrastructure development. General Hospital Nwofe was upgraded to a Specialist Hospital, while 171 Primary Healthcare Centres are currently undergoing revitalization across the State. About 40 additional healthcare facilities are also being upgraded to Level 2 Health Centres to strengthen community-based healthcare services.
The administration has equally sustained investments in medical education and manpower development. The former School of Nursing, Uburu, was upgraded to the Ebonyi State College of Nursing and Midwifery, with increased admission quotas for both Nursing and Midwifery programmes.
An ultra-modern two-storey hostel and new classroom blocks with a ground-floor library are currently under construction within the institution to improve learning infrastructure and students’ welfare.
Similarly, at the Ebonyi State College of Health Sciences and Technology, Ngbo, the government successfully secured re-accreditation for all departments while upgrading infrastructure and furnishing the college clinic.
The State Government is also pursuing long-term healthcare expansion through the establishment of the Ebonyi State Virology Research and Innovation Centre aimed at strengthening research, innovation, disease surveillance, and response capacity.
Construction work is equally ongoing at the ICT University Teaching Hospital in Nwofe, Izzi Local Government Area, a project expected to integrate healthcare delivery with medical education and research.
Through strategic partnerships and donor-supported interventions, Ebonyi State also attracted portable digital X-ray machines worth hundreds of millions of naira, alongside oxygen-producing plants to improve critical care services across health facilities.
At the grassroots level, the administration intensified maternal and child healthcare interventions through the procurement and distribution of 2,515 delivery kits and 1,300 baby shower packs to 503 Primary Healthcare Centres across the State.
To strengthen supervision and healthcare outreach services in rural areas, motorcycles were procured for officers in charge of Primary Healthcare Centres to support immunization coverage and field operations.
Observers say the ongoing reforms under Governor Nwifuru reflect a deliberate effort to build a functional, responsive, and people-oriented healthcare system capable of meeting the growing needs of Ebonyi residents.
The administration’s interventions have continued to improve healthcare access, strengthen emergency response systems, enhance medical personnel welfare, revitalize primary healthcare services, and expand institutional capacity across the State.
Stakeholders believe the reforms are gradually laying the foundation for a more resilient healthcare sector where quality medical services become increasingly accessible to citizens across Ebonyi State.
