May Day: Fubara Salutes Rivers Workers, Backs Tinubu’S Economic Reforms

Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has commended workers in the state for their resilience, dedication, and vital contributions to its growth and development.

The governor gave the commendation during the 2026 Workers’ Day celebration held on Friday at Isaac Boro Park in Port Harcourt. He was represented at the event by his deputy, Professor Ngozi Nma Odu.
Fubara described workers as the backbone of sustainable development, noting that no society can thrive without their commitment and sacrifices. He praised the workforce for their loyalty and continued contributions across key sectors, including education, healthcare, infrastructure, and industry.

He observed that Workers’ Day, which originated from the struggle for an eight-hour workday in the United States, has evolved into a global event that recognises the role of workers in national growth and development.
Highlighting the impact of the workforce, the governor said their efforts have improved access to quality education and healthcare, supported job creation, and stimulated economic activities across Rivers State.

While acknowledging the economic challenges facing many workers, particularly the rising cost of living, Fubara assured that his administration remains committed to policies aimed at improving workers’ welfare and overall well-being.
He also lauded the economic reforms of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing them as bold and necessary steps that have helped stabilise the nation’s economy. According to the governor, the reforms have improved foreign exchange liquidity, reduced inflationary pressures, and boosted the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Fubara further noted that the Federal Government had taken steps to enhance workers’ welfare, including the approval of a new minimum wage and additional incentives for civil servants.

“Our economy is on a positive trajectory under the leadership of Mr President, and it will continue to improve. We must support policies and programmes that are designed to strengthen our nation,” he said.

The governor also underscored the importance of workers in governance and revenue generation, noting that taxes paid by workers enable government to provide security and essential social services.
Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to labour as a key partner in development, Fubara appreciated the workforce for their role in fostering a peaceful, secure, and prosperous Rivers State. He urged organised labour to remain committed to the state’s progress while continuing to advocate for democracy, social justice, and improved welfare.

In his remarks, the Rivers State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Alex Agwanwor, commended the governor for his dedication to workers’ welfare and development.
He listed key achievements of the administration to include the implementation of the National Minimum Wage Act, renovation of the State Secretariat, revival of the Rivers State Transport Company (RTC), and consistent payment of end-of-year bonuses to public servants.

Agwanwor said workers remain central to productivity and development, adding that they are prepared to contribute meaningfully to the state’s growth.

“We must move beyond complaints and take initiative to rediscover the mission and destiny of our dear state,” he said.

The 2026 Workers’ Day celebration brought together labour leaders, civil servants, and stakeholders to honour the contributions of workers and reaffirm their role in nation-building.
