Ebonyi Governor’s Three Years In Office Draw Mixed Assessment As Critic Lists Achievements, Concerns

As Governor Francis Nwifuru marks three years in office, media entrepreneur and public affairs commentator Nwoba Chika Nwoba has offered a critical assessment of the administration's performance, highlighting what he described as a mixture of notable achievements and unfulfilled promises.

In a statement marking the governor's third anniversary in office, Nwoba acknowledged several initiatives undertaken by the administration while expressing concerns over project execution, policy continuity, and the quality of some infrastructure projects across the state.

According to him, the administration's notable interventions include the award of scholarships to about 250 Ebonyi indigenes for studies in the United Kingdom and over 300 others for postgraduate studies in local institutions. He also cited the sponsorship of about 150 persons for skill acquisition programmes in Enugu State.

Nwoba further noted that the government established a state economic team and a committee for the revitalisation of NIGERCEM but alleged that both initiatives were later abandoned.

The commentator also referenced the state's borrowing of N23 billion for the revitalisation of the Ebonyi Airport project, arguing that the facility remains largely unoperational despite earlier promises by the administration to establish an Ebonyi-owned airline.

He alleged that the governor's community road initiative, which proposed the construction of two kilometres of road in each community, has suffered setbacks, while palace projects for traditional rulers initiated by the government remain incomplete more than two years after commencement.

On infrastructure, Nwoba pointed to the ongoing Vanco Flyover project in Abakaliki, claiming that construction challenges have slowed progress. He also criticised what he described as the construction of substandard roads in parts of the state capital and delays in completing the civil servants' housing estate project.

The critic, however, acknowledged government efforts in the health sector, including the provision of medical equipment to some hospitals, the recruitment of medical doctors, and the provision of operational vehicles and allowances for health personnel.

He also listed the recruitment of teachers into public schools and the construction of new classroom blocks among the administration's achievements, though he argued that some of the facilities are yet to be fully equipped.

Nwoba further criticised the distribution of sport utility vehicles (SUVs) to political office holders, serving National Assembly members, selected clergy, and other beneficiaries, describing the gesture as a questionable use of public resources.

He also alleged that a significant number of projects initiated by the administration have either been abandoned or delivered below expected standards.

While congratulating Governor Nwifuru on his third anniversary in office, Nwoba maintained that the administration must address concerns relating to project completion, infrastructure quality, and policy implementation to meet the expectations of Ebonyi residents.

The statement comes as stakeholders across Ebonyi State continue to assess the achievements and challenges of the Nwifuru administration three years after assuming office.
