Diri Has Surpassed Campaign Promises — Ikuli
The Technical Adviser to the Bayelsa State Governor on Media, Public Affairs and Strategy, Hon. Wisdom Oniekpar Ikuli, has said that Governor Douye Diri has exceeded expectations and delivered beyond his campaign promises despite facing significant challenges since assuming office.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Ikuli recalled that the emergence of Diri as the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) during the governorship primaries was initially met with widespread skepticism and opposition, with critics questioning his capacity and leadership style.
According to him, the situation worsened at the onset of the administration following the Supreme Court of Nigeria judgment that affirmed Diri’s victory, as the government reportedly inherited an empty treasury.
He noted that the administration barely settled before the outbreak of the COVID-19, which disrupted governance and economic activities globally, including in Bayelsa State. Despite these setbacks, Ikuli said the state earned commendation for its effective response to the pandemic.
He further highlighted the devastating impact of the 2022 flood, describing it as the worst in decades, but commended the administration for navigating the crisis and sustaining governance.
“Despite these daunting challenges, Governor Diri has proven critics wrong through visible achievements and people-oriented policies,” Ikuli said.
The aide listed several key projects undertaken by the administration, including the 60-megawatt gas turbine project; the Sagbama–Ekeremor, Nembe–Brass, and Ekeremor–Agge roads; the ongoing development of the New Yenagoa City; internal road networks; and a new road linking the city to the LNG project and airport.
Other projects cited include a 25,000-capacity FIFA-standard stadium, a nine-storey state secretariat complex, rigid pavement roads across communities, and investments in transportation such as aircraft acquisition for Bayelsa Airline, vehicles for the Prosperity Taxi Scheme, and marine vessels including ferries, barges, cruise boats, and water ambulances.
Ikuli also credited the governor’s community policing approach for improving security in the state, describing Bayelsa as one of the safest in the country.
He said the administration’s inclusive governance style has reduced political tension and division, fostered unity across party lines, and created a more conducive environment for businesses and residents.
“Governor Diri’s leadership has restored hope, reduced hostility, and strengthened the sense of collective identity among Bayelsans,” he added.
Ikuli expressed optimism about the future of the state, praying for continued progress and prosperity under the current administration.
Governor Diri, who operates under the “Assured Prosperity” agenda, has been widely praised by supporters for his commitment to infrastructure development, security, and social cohesion in Bayelsa State.
