Oyarekwa Felix Pledges New Approach To Representation For Akoko-Edo Constituency 2
Dr. Austine Oyarekwa Felix, candidate for the Edo State House of Assembly representing Akoko-Edo Constituency 2 on the platform of the National Democratic Party (NDP), has outlined his vision for what he describes as purposeful, accountable and people-centred representation.
Felix, who is presenting his candidacy around experience, human-capital development and effective representation, said his professional background has equipped him with the knowledge and skills required to contribute meaningfully to the development of the constituency.
According to his profile, he has more than two decades of professional experience spanning human resources, organisational development, humanitarian operations and international development, with experience across more than 25 countries.
His professional engagements have included work with organisations such as Mercy Corps, the International Rescue Committee, Management Sciences for Health, Palladium and Save the Children UK.
Felix said the experience would inform his approach to representation, particularly in areas affecting education, healthcare, infrastructure, skills development, entrepreneurship, women and youth empowerment, support for small businesses and inclusive community development.
He emphasised the importance of human capital, describing people as Nigeria's greatest resource and stressing the need to create opportunities for citizens to develop and apply their skills.
The candidate also noted that effective legislative representation goes beyond the personal construction of roads, schools or hospitals, pointing to the constitutional responsibilities of a House of Assembly member, including legislation, representation and oversight.
He said a representative should understand how institutions operate, engage relevant government agencies, advocate for constituents and use legislative and oversight responsibilities to draw attention to issues affecting the people.
Felix's proposed areas of focus include improving educational opportunities, strengthening healthcare advocacy, promoting infrastructure and connectivity, supporting skills acquisition and entrepreneurship, empowering women and young people, and improving access to accountable representation.
He said his approach would place people, purpose, performance, accountability and development at the centre of his engagement with the constituency.
The candidate's message also places emphasis on human-capital development and economic inclusion, with a stated interest in creating opportunities for young people and supporting community-based development.
The National Democratic Party (NDP), under which Felix is contesting, is listed among Nigeria's registered political parties by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Felix's candidacy has consequently brought issues of professional experience, legislative representation, human-capital development and community advocacy into the conversation ahead of the 2027 Edo State House of Assembly election.
For Akoko-Edo Constituency 2, the emerging debate centres on the expectations of constituents from whoever represents them in the Edo State House of Assembly, particularly regarding legislation, oversight, advocacy and engagement with government institutions.
