Oluku Fire Incident: Ogbomo Ernest Condoles Victims, Calls For Improved Emergency Response In Edo

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate for Orhionmwon/Uhunmwode Federal Constituency, Michael Ogbomo Ernest, has expressed deep sorrow over the fire incident reported in Oluku, Benin City, extending his condolences to affected families and calling for urgent improvements in emergency response services across Edo State.

In a condolence message issued following the incident, Ernest described the tragedy as deeply distressing, sympathising with families who may have lost loved ones and residents whose homes, businesses and livelihoods may have been affected.

He also offered prayers for those who sustained injuries, wishing them a speedy recovery and urging that affected individuals and families receive the necessary assistance to overcome the consequences of the incident.

Beyond expressing sympathy, the NDC candidate emphasised the need for a comprehensive review of emergency preparedness and response mechanisms in Edo State, particularly the availability of functional firefighting equipment, accessible fire stations, emergency ambulances and adequately trained first responders.

According to him, the speed and effectiveness of emergency interventions can make a critical difference during disasters, when delays may increase the risk to lives and property.

Ernest stressed that emergency preparedness should be treated as a fundamental public safety responsibility rather than an optional government service.

He called on the Edo State Government and relevant emergency management agencies to prioritise the provision of well-equipped fire stations in strategic locations, maintain functional firefighting vehicles and ambulances, strengthen emergency communication systems and ensure that personnel receive the necessary training to respond effectively to crises.

He further urged the appropriate authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding the Oluku incident and assess the effectiveness of the emergency response, with a view to identifying operational gaps and implementing corrective measures.

The candidate noted that lessons drawn from such incidents should translate into practical actions capable of reducing preventable deaths, limiting property damage and strengthening public confidence in the state's emergency response system.

He also emphasised the importance of public awareness, encouraging communities to support fire prevention efforts, observe appropriate safety measures and promptly report emergencies through recognised channels.

While acknowledging the grief and uncertainty that often accompany such tragedies, Ernest called for compassion and solidarity with all those affected, noting that the recovery process may require coordinated support from government agencies, community leaders and other relevant stakeholders.

He prayed for comfort for bereaved families, healing for the injured and strength for everyone affected by the incident.

Ernest reaffirmed that protecting lives and property must remain a central responsibility of public institutions, urging authorities to take concrete steps to ensure that emergency services across Edo State are adequately equipped, accessible and capable of responding promptly when disaster strikes.
