Oisamoje Condoles Oluku Market Inferno Victims, Calls For Urgent Road Maintenance
Evang. Mrs Iseme Maria Oisamoje, the 2027 Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate for Edo North Senatorial District, has expressed condolences to the families of victims of the petroleum tanker inferno around Oluku Market in Edo State, calling for urgent action to improve road safety and prevent similar tragedies.
Oisamoje, in a condolence message, described the incident as deeply saddening, noting that it claimed several lives and left many others with varying degrees of burns.
She extended her heartfelt sympathies to the families who lost their loved ones and prayed for the speedy recovery of those receiving treatment.
She also prayed for the peaceful repose of the souls of the deceased, describing the incident as a tragedy that raises serious concerns about road safety and the need for proactive measures to protect lives.
According to her, reports suggesting that a pothole may have contributed to the accident underscore the importance of regular road maintenance and the responsibility of governments at all levels to ensure that highways are safe for motorists and other road users.
The NDC senatorial candidate stressed that road infrastructure must receive adequate attention, warning that poor road conditions could expose commuters to avoidable dangers.
She explained that road maintenance is a key component of her SHARES Manifesto, with the letter R representing Road Maintenance, reflecting her commitment to safer roads and improved infrastructure.
Oisamoje questioned the prioritisation of new transportation initiatives without corresponding attention to the condition of the roads on which such vehicles would operate.
“While government officials commission CNG buses, we must also ask: On which roads will these buses operate if our highways remain in a deplorable condition?” she asked.
She maintained that the people deserve safe roads, responsible leadership and preventive measures capable of saving lives, rather than explanations after avoidable tragedies.
The senatorial candidate called for a more proactive approach to road management, emphasising that routine inspections, timely repairs and proper maintenance are essential to reducing road accidents and protecting lives and property.
She urged the relevant authorities to treat road safety as a priority and take practical steps to address infrastructure deficiencies that could endanger road users.
