Leghemo Advocates Women’s Economic Empowerment For Southern Ijaw Development
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate for the Southern Ijaw Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Diepreye Abaye Leghemo, has called for greater economic empowerment of women, describing it as a critical component of community development.
Leghemo said women across Southern Ijaw, including market women, petty traders, farmers, artisans, entrepreneurs and mothers, play vital roles in sustaining families and driving the growth of their communities.
He, however, stressed that their resilience and contributions must be matched with practical support and opportunities to enable them to improve their livelihoods and achieve financial independence.
The NDC candidate advocated improved access to economic opportunities, business development support, vocational training and essential resources to help women build sustainable livelihoods.
According to him, women should not be left to struggle without the necessary support to fulfil their potential, while young women should have opportunities to develop their talents, establish businesses and become financially independent.
He also noted that mothers should not have to choose between meeting their families' basic needs and pursuing their personal ambitions.
Leghemo maintained that meaningful representation must take into account the challenges confronting women and prioritise practical solutions capable of improving their economic well-being and strengthening their participation in community development.
He said women's empowerment should go beyond political promises, emphasising the need to recognise their contributions and provide the necessary support for them to thrive.
“The progress of Southern Ijaw will be incomplete if our women are not given the opportunities to rise, succeed, and prosper,” he said.
Leghemo urged residents to work collectively towards building a constituency where women can realise their potential and their families and communities can benefit from their success.
He called on voters in Southern Ijaw Federal Constituency to support the NDC in the January 16, 2027 election, urging them to make their voices count at the ballot box.
