Aiguobarueghian’s 2023 Fisheries Bill Highlights Legislative Capacity, People-Oriented Representation
Hon. Charity Iguodala Aiguobarueghian, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate for Ovia Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, has been commended for sponsoring a bill in 2023 seeking to modernise fisheries regulation and promote sustainable fish production in Edo State.
The bill, titled A Bill for a Law to Repeal the Edo State Fishery Edict of 1991 and Enact a Law to Regulate Fisheries and Other Related Matters in Edo State, was described as a significant legislative initiative aimed at addressing the limitations of the state's existing fisheries regulatory framework.
According to a statement by CIA Media, Aiguobarueghian's legislative intervention reflected his understanding of the importance of fisheries to food security, employment generation, economic development and the livelihoods of residents.
The statement noted that the Edo State Fishery Edict of 1991 had become outdated after more than three decades, making the need for a modern regulatory framework increasingly important.
It explained that the proposed legislation sought to establish a contemporary legal framework for fisheries management, encourage sustainable fish production and create opportunities for young people and women in fish farming, processing and marketing.
The bill was also presented as an opportunity to attract investment into Edo State's aquaculture value chain, protect water bodies from over-exploitation and strengthen the state's internally generated revenue through effective regulation.
CIA Media maintained that the initiative demonstrated how legislative interventions could address practical economic challenges and create opportunities for communities, particularly those whose livelihoods depend on fishing and related activities.
The statement further described Aiguobarueghian as a prepared and people-focused legislator whose approach to lawmaking emphasised policies capable of improving livelihoods and promoting economic prosperity.
It added that his legislative record reflected an understanding that effective representation should go beyond political rhetoric to include practical interventions that address the needs of constituents.
Aiguobarueghian is seeking election to the House of Representatives to represent Ovia Federal Constituency under the platform of the NDC.
His supporters believe that his experience and legislative approach would enable him to contribute to the development of Ovia Federal Constituency and Nigeria through people-oriented legislation.
They have called on voters to support his candidacy, arguing that his previous legislative initiative provides a basis for assessing his commitment to public service.
The statement concluded with a call for his election to the House of Representatives under the campaign slogan, “One Good Term Deserves Promotion,” urging voters to support the NDC.
