Nwifuru Strengthens Ebonyi Health Sector With Electron Microscope For Virology Complex

Ebonyi State Governor, Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, has further strengthened the state’s healthcare and scientific research capacity with the delivery of a state-of-the-art electron microscope for the Ebonyi State Virology, Research and Innovation Complex at Oferekpe.

The latest intervention is part of the administration’s broader efforts to improve healthcare delivery, strengthen medical research and expand access to modern diagnostic services across the state.

Since assuming office on May 29, 2023, Governor Nwifuru has prioritised the health sector under his administration’s People’s Charter of Needs, with interventions covering healthcare personnel, infrastructure, equipment and access to health insurance.

The administration has undertaken a workforce reorganisation across the 13 General Hospitals and the Government House Clinic, while also providing operational vehicles and improving remuneration for medical practitioners as part of measures to strengthen service delivery and reduce professional attrition.

Beyond human resources, the state government has continued to upgrade healthcare infrastructure and procure medical equipment and consumables, while also providing residential accommodation for medical personnel.

Particular attention has been given to primary healthcare facilities, with the aim of improving access to quality medical services for residents in rural and peri-urban communities.

The administration has also expanded the enrolment of Ebonyi residents in the State Health Insurance Scheme to reduce the financial burden of accessing healthcare and make medical services more accessible to residents across different income levels.

Speaking on the significance of the newly acquired equipment, Dr. Euslar Nnenna Onu, the Ebonyi State Virologist, said the electron microscope would significantly enhance diagnostic services, scientific research and innovation at the Virology Complex.

Dr. Onu explained that the first tranche of equipment for the facility was received in June 2026, with additional consignments subsequently delivered. She said the arrival of the electron microscope brings the centre closer to full operational capacity and positions it to undertake advanced scientific investigations.

According to her, the equipment will support research and diagnosis in areas including virology, mycology, bacteriology, immunology, parasitology, agronomy and material sciences.

Dr. Onu added that the technology would be useful in examining renal biopsies, studying cellular and subcellular structures relevant to cancer diagnosis, and investigating ultrastructural abnormalities in cardiac and neurological tissues.

She further noted that the microscope would improve the study of infectious diseases by enabling researchers to examine viral and parasitic organisms that may not be visible with conventional optical microscopy.

The development is expected to reduce the need for sending medical and research samples outside the state for specialised analysis, thereby saving time and resources while strengthening Ebonyi’s local scientific capacity.

Construction work at the Oferekpe facility is also ongoing, with the government combining the development of the physical infrastructure with the acquisition of specialised scientific equipment.

The state government believes that the investment will strengthen Ebonyi’s capacity for disease surveillance, medical research and advanced diagnosis, while contributing to the long-term development of the state’s healthcare system.

With the latest development, the administration is positioning the Virology, Research and Innovation Complex as an important centre for scientific research and health security in Ebonyi State.
