Agbonayinma Gives EFCC 14-Day Ultimatum To Reopen Alleged Atiku Financial Crime Case
Former member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Ehiozuwa Agbonayinma, has given the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) a 14-day ultimatum to reopen an alleged financial crime case involving former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
Agbonayinma is expected to disclose more details about the matter when he appears on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, at 9:30 a.m.
The former lawmaker, through his lawyer, Chief Hannibal Egbe Uwaifo, SAN, reportedly petitioned the EFCC, urging the commission to revisit investigations conducted against Atiku during his tenure as Vice President.
He cited an alleged 2006 EFCC investigation report concerning Atiku, as well as a 2010 report by the United States Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, which examined the movement of funds involving Atiku and his family.
Agbonayinma argued that the issues raised in the earlier investigations should be reviewed by the EFCC to determine whether there are grounds for further investigation or prosecution.
The allegations date back to the political crisis between Atiku and the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, during which investigations involving the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) and other financial transactions generated significant controversy.
The 2010 U.S. Senate report also examined the movement of more than $40 million in funds involving Atiku's family into the United States. However, subsequent fact-checking established that the report did not result in criminal charges against Atiku.
Agbonayinma has reportedly warned that if the EFCC fails to act within 14 days of receiving his petition, he may seek legal redress.
The renewed demand comes as political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections intensify, with Atiku emerging as one of the prominent figures in the opposition political camp.
Agbonayinma is expected to provide further explanation of his allegations, the documents backing his petition and his demand for renewed investigation during his appearance on Sunrise Daily.
