Ominimini: Urhobo Produces Oil, Yet Our People Still Suffer

By Obus Akpore
The 2027 House of Representatives hopeful for the Ughelli North/Ughelli South/Udu Federal Constituency, Dr. Ominimini Obiuwevbi, has vowed to champion the interests of the Urhobo people at the National Assembly if elected.

Obiuwevbi made the pledge during a consultation with stakeholders and residents of Udu, Delta State, where he interacted with the people alongside former Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, and other political stakeholders.

Speaking at the gathering, the House of Representatives candidate said it was unacceptable that the Urhobo people, despite belonging to an oil-producing region, continued to experience poverty, unemployment and inadequate development.

According to him, his mission in Abuja would be to aggressively pursue issues affecting the Urhobo people and ensure that the interests and rights of the people receive the attention they deserve at the federal level.

“Urhobo is oil producing, but our people are suffering,” he said, stressing that he would do everything within his legislative capacity to secure what legitimately belongs to the Urhobo people.

Obiuwevbi also reaffirmed his commitment to the agitation for the creation of Urhobo State, promising that the issue would remain a major priority in his legislative agenda.

He said effective representation must go beyond occupying a seat in the National Assembly, noting that elected representatives must remain accessible and responsive to the people they represent.
The politician outlined job creation for graduates, empowerment programmes for market women and open, accessible representation among the areas he intends to prioritise if elected.

He further declared that the people deserve representatives with the capacity, courage and commitment to fight for their interests at the national level.

“You don’t send a lazy leader to the Senate or House of Representatives. I and Senator Ovie Omo-Agege are capable and ready to fight for our people,” he said.

The people of Udu reportedly received the aspirant with enthusiasm and expressed support for his political ambition.

Obiuwevbi has previously held public and political positions in Delta State and has been involved in advocacy for the development of the Urhobo nation. Reports have also identified him as a former DESOPADEC commissioner and a former deputy president-general of the Urhobo Progress Union, while his advocacy for the creation of Urhobo State has featured prominently in recent engagements.

The consultation formed part of his ongoing engagement with communities across the Ughelli North/Ughelli South/Udu Federal Constituency ahead of the 2027 elections.
