Edo Activist Alleges Threats Against Citizen Over Criticism Of Etsako East Council, Demands Investigation
Prominent Edo-based human rights activist and Coordinator-General of the Edo North Unity Forum World-Wide, Comrade JP Christopher Okhai Okhani, has raised alarm over what he described as alleged threats against a citizen for criticizing the administration of the Etsako East Local Government Council.
Okhani, who is widely known for his advocacy for good governance, transparency, accountability, and the protection of citizens' rights, made the allegations in a statement issued on Tuesday.
According to the activist, he received what he described as credible information alleging that a close ally of the Chairman of Etsako East Local Government Council, identified as Yakubu, was instructed to threaten Ms. Blessing Damisa over her criticism of the council's administration.
He further alleged that the Chairman directed Yakubu to hand the phone to Ms. Damisa's mother, during which threats were allegedly made that "unknown gunmen" would be used against Blessing if she continued to criticize the local government.
Okhani said that, in line with his longstanding commitment to accountability and impartial advocacy, he made efforts to contact the Chairman directly to verify the allegations and seek clarification. However, he said those attempts were unsuccessful.
He added that he subsequently contacted the Chairman's Chief of Staff, Mr. Bello Emmanuel, requesting that the matter be investigated.
According to Okhani, rather than initiating an investigation, the Chief of Staff allegedly responded with insults, stating: "You are a big fool, a senseless goat. Stop spreading fake rumours. Okhani be warned."
The activist condemned the alleged response, describing it as inconsistent with democratic principles and the responsibilities of public officials.
"Threatening citizens and their families because they speak about governance is not leadership. Criticism of public office holders should never be mistaken for hostility toward a political party or government," he said.
Okhani called on the Chairman of Etsako East Local Government Council to publicly address the allegations and ensure that his aides conduct themselves in accordance with democratic standards.
He also appealed to security agencies in Edo State to monitor the situation and guarantee the safety of Ms. Blessing Damisa, her family, and other citizens who exercise their constitutional right to freedom of expression.
A respected voice in civil society, Okhani has consistently campaigned for transparency, accountability, and improved governance across Edo North. In recent years, he has been involved in advocacy against alleged abuse of power, corruption, and violations of human rights by public officials and security agencies.
He also drew national attention in 2025 following an alleged assault and subsequent detention after organizing a legislative town hall meeting in Auchi. The incident led to a fundamental human rights enforcement suit at the Federal High Court in Benin City, where he challenged the actions of security agencies.
Reiterating his commitment to democratic accountability, Okhani urged residents of Edo North not to be intimidated into silence, insisting that constructive criticism remains essential to good governance and effective public service.
As of the time of filing this report, neither the Chairman of Etsako East Local Government Council nor his Chief of Staff had issued a public response to the allegations. The claims remain allegations and have not been independently verified.
