Cardinal Onaiyekan's Moral Voice Rooted In Principle, Not Politics — Media Consultant

Veteran Catholic cleric, Cardinal John Onaiyekan, has once again drawn national attention following his remarks after a meeting between the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, with a media consultant, Christopher Sunday, describing the Cardinal's intervention as consistent with his long-standing commitment to truth, justice, and national conscience.

In a commentary made available to journalists, Sunday argued that attempts to portray Cardinal Onaiyekan's remarks as political opposition to the Tinubu administration ignore the cleric's decades-long record of speaking truth to power, irrespective of who occupies the presidency.

According to him, the Cardinal's public interventions have never been influenced by political convenience but by his ecclesiastical responsibility to defend justice, peace, accountability, and the common good.

He recalled that during the heated 2006 debate over former President Olusegun Obasanjo's proposed third-term agenda, Cardinal Onaiyekan openly opposed efforts to alter constitutional term limits for personal political advantage, despite the sensitive political climate at the time.

Sunday noted that the same courage remains evident today, stressing that the former Archbishop of Abuja has consistently used his moral authority to address issues affecting Nigerians without regard to partisan interests.

"The Cardinal's voice has never been determined by who occupies Aso Rock," he stated. "His interventions are rooted in the Church's social teaching, which emphasizes that political leadership is a service to humanity and that those in authority must remain accountable to the people."

He explained that the Cardinal's ecclesiastical authority places a moral obligation on him to engage public leaders whenever national interest, justice, and the welfare of citizens are at stake.

The media consultant further observed that constructive criticism from religious leaders should not be misconstrued as political hostility, noting that democratic governance thrives when leaders are willing to listen to sincere concerns from respected voices in society.

He maintained that Cardinal Onaiyekan's history demonstrates unwavering consistency in challenging governments whenever necessary, regardless of political affiliation.

According to Sunday, Nigeria's democracy requires courageous voices capable of engaging those in authority without fear or favour, adding that Cardinal Onaiyekan's contributions continue to represent the important meeting point between faith, conscience, and civic responsibility.

He concluded that it is this combination of moral authority and courage that has established Cardinal Onaiyekan as one of Nigeria's most respected voices on national issues, urging political actors and citizens alike to view his interventions through the lens of principle rather than partisan politics.
