Ovia 2027: Aiguobarueghian's Record Shapes Conversations On Trust And Representation

As political activities gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections, discussions about leadership, accountability, and representation continue to dominate conversations across Ovia Federal Constituency.

Stretching from farming communities to bustling commercial centres, the constituency has, over the years, assessed its representatives based on accessibility, performance, and integrity. Political observers note that public confidence is often built when leaders consistently engage with their constituents and deliver on their promises.

Across communities including Oluku, Ekiadolor, Isiohor, Okada, Usen, and Udo, one recurring theme in public discourse is trust. Many residents who spoke with our correspondent associated that trust with the name of the Member representing Ovia Federal Constituency, Hon. Charity Iguodala Aiguobarueghian.

A mother whose daughter benefited from the lawmaker's scholarship programme said the intervention restored hope for her family.

"When we hear that name, we feel calm. It means somebody is listening. In Ovia, trust is not easy to earn, but that name gives us hope," she said.

A youth leader also described the lawmaker as accessible to the people.

"Young people want results. We want jobs, we want security. When people mention Aiguobarueghian, they talk about someone who answers calls and comes home to meet the people. That is why many describe the name as a shield to trust."

Another resident added that while a name alone cannot solve every challenge, consistency in responding to the needs of constituents inspires confidence.

However, not all residents share the same view. Some maintained that trust must continually be earned through improved infrastructure, better road networks, expanded youth empowerment programmes, and sustained constituency development.

Despite differing opinions, supporters say the phrase, "A Shield to Trust," has become synonymous with the lawmaker's style of representation, while critics insist it should remain a standard against which his performance is measured.

Among the initiatives frequently cited by residents is the scholarship awarded to Miss Sonia Osasumwen, a pupil of Okhun Secondary School in Ovia North-East. During the presentation, Hon. Aiguobarueghian said he was fulfilling a promise made to encourage the young student to pursue her education without financial distractions.

The lawmaker is also credited with establishing the Charity Iguodala Aiguobarueghian Cup (CIA Cup) in December 2023. The grassroots football competition brought together teams from seven wards—Adolor (Ward 4), Ofunmwegbe (Ward 5), Oluku (Ward 6), Uhiere (Ward 7), Isiuwa (Ward 8), Okokhuo (Ward 9), and Ekiadolor.

The tournament, which began with preliminary matches in November 2023, was designed to engage young people positively while discouraging idleness, violence, and cultism.

Speaking at the event, Hon. Aiguobarueghian reaffirmed his commitment to youth development, saying the initiative was aimed at promoting unity and peaceful coexistence among young people.

"It is time to end hatred and killings among our youths, who are the leaders of tomorrow," he said, adding that the competition would continue by the grace of God.

Residents who witnessed the tournament commended the initiative, noting that participating teams were provided with footballs, jerseys, and other logistics. Many described it as the first football competition of its kind in the constituency.

At the end of the tournament, Oluku emerged champions and received the trophy alongside a cash prize of ₦300,000. Adolor finished second, earning ₦200,000 and medals, while NIFOR secured third place with a cash prize of ₦100,000.

As preparations for the 2027 National Assembly elections intensify, conversations continue across markets, community squares, and radio programmes on the qualities that should define leadership in Ovia Federal Constituency.

Hon. Charity Iguodala Aiguobarueghian, who is seeking election to represent the constituency on the platform of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), remains one of the prominent figures at the centre of those discussions, with supporters pointing to his record in office and critics calling for even greater developmental strides.
