NDC Alleges Attack On Appreciation Tour In Imo, Condemns Disruption Of Political Gathering

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Imo State Chapter, has condemned what it described as a violent attack on its appreciation tour held in Umuoyima, Owerri Nchiise, Owerri Municipal, on Tuesday.

In a press statement issued on July 14, the opposition party alleged that the attack was orchestrated by the Special Assistant to the Imo State Governor on Monitoring and Compliance, accusing the official of mobilizing thugs to disrupt what it described as a peaceful political gathering.

According to the NDC, the incident represents not only an attack on the party but also a threat to Nigeria's democratic process.

"This attack is not just an attack on our party; it is an attack on democracy itself," the statement read.

The party warned that actions capable of undermining political freedom could set a dangerous precedent and urged political leaders to avoid conduct that could trigger instability. It also referenced Nigeria's political crisis of 1983, cautioning against a return to such an era.

The NDC called on the Nigerian Police Force and other security agencies to remain impartial and professional in carrying out their constitutional responsibilities.

The party stressed that security personnel should not allow themselves to be used to suppress democratic rights, regardless of the individuals involved.

Appealing to civil society organisations, democratic institutions, and residents of Imo State, the NDC urged all stakeholders to unite in defending democratic values and the rule of law.

The party further called on the Imo State Government to caution Mr. Chinasa Nwaneri and Mr. Tapey, alleging that government officials should not use their offices or state resources to intimidate opposition parties or stifle political participation.

Reaffirming its commitment to peaceful political engagement, the NDC urged its members and supporters to remain calm, law-abiding, and resolute despite the incident.
