Nwifuru's Local Content Policy Driving Economic Growth In Ebonyi
Governor of Ebonyi State, Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, has again demonstrated his administration's commitment to promoting local enterprise and stimulating grassroots economic development through the patronage of indigenous craftsmen and businesses.
This was revealed by the Governor's Special Assistant on New Media, Mr. Leo Ekene Oketa, who recounted an incident that occurred during an inspection of ongoing government projects on May 30, 2026.
According to Oketa, the Governor and his entourage visited a project site that required furnishing. During discussions on how to procure the necessary furniture and fittings, suggestions were made to source the items from outside the state.
However, Governor Nwifuru directed that a furniture maker from Abakaliki be engaged to produce the required furnishings locally.
Explaining the rationale behind the decision, the Governor stated: "That is the essence of having your craft in Abakaliki."
Oketa noted that the Governor's remark reflected a broader development philosophy centred on empowering local people and strengthening the state's economy through the deliberate patronage of homegrown skills and businesses.
He explained that the Governor's position underscores the belief that development goes beyond the construction of physical infrastructure and should also create economic opportunities for residents.
"Every time local skills are engaged, local families earn income. Every time local businesses are patronized, money circulates within our communities. Every time government projects create opportunities for Ebonyi craftsmen and traders, confidence grows and livelihoods improve," Oketa said.
He further observed that the Governor's directive aligns with the administration's ongoing empowerment programmes, workers' welfare initiatives, gratuity payments, and support for local contractors across the state.
According to him, the approach embodies the principle of building the state's economy by investing in its people and ensuring that the benefits of government projects are felt directly by local communities.
Oketa described the Governor's statement at the project site as a simple but powerful expression of an economic vision that prioritises inclusive growth, local participation, and sustainable development.
"Sometimes, the biggest economic policies are not announced from conference halls. Sometimes, they are revealed in simple decisions made on project sites," he added.
The incident, he said, serves as another example of the Nwifuru administration's resolve to promote local content and create opportunities for Ebonyi residents through government-driven development initiatives.
