Governor Alia Orders Immediate Probe Into Killing Of Benue MACBAN Chairman
Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, has condemned the killing of the Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) in Benue State, Alhaji Ardo Risku, and his associate, describing the incident as a tragic attempt to undermine the growing peace and stability in the state.
In a statement issued on Saturday by the Governor's Chief Press Secretary, Sir Tersoo Kula, Governor Alia expressed deep shock and sadness over the killings, noting that they occurred at a critical period when the state was recording significant progress in restoring peace across several local government areas.
According to the Governor, the incident is not only a tragic loss but also a deliberate effort to frustrate the reconciliation and peace-building initiatives being pursued by his administration.
"It is deeply regrettable that this unfortunate incident occurred shortly after a security meeting," the Governor stated.
Governor Alia emphasized that the killing of a community leader and peace advocate represents a major setback to ongoing efforts aimed at strengthening dialogue and mutual understanding among various stakeholders in the state.
He consequently directed all relevant security agencies to immediately launch a comprehensive and transparent investigation into the incident, identify and apprehend those responsible, and ensure they are prosecuted without delay.
The Governor also ordered security agencies to strengthen protective measures for community leaders actively involved in promoting peace and security across the state.
While acknowledging the gravity of the incident, Governor Alia appealed to members of MACBAN and the general public to remain calm, peaceful, and law-abiding.
"We must not allow those who profit from chaos to succeed in inciting further violence or disrupting the peace we have taken time to build," he said.
Governor Alia extended his heartfelt condolences to the family of the late Alhaji Ardo Risku, the leadership of MACBAN, and all those affected by the tragedy.
He reaffirmed his administration's unwavering commitment to sustaining peace, security, and justice in Benue State.
"Our administration remains resolute: Benue is a home for peace, and we will not allow the shadows of the past to eclipse the bright future we are currently building," the Governor said.
