Bayelsa Government Cracks Down On Illegal Passenger Loading, Directs Strict Compliance With Transport Regulations

The Bayelsa State Government has reiterated its commitment to developing a safe, organized, and efficient transportation system, warning transport operators against the illegal practice of picking up passengers along roads within the Yenagoa metropolis.

In a special announcement issued by the Ministry of Transport, the government expressed concern that despite several directives and public sensitization campaigns, some intra-state and inter-state transport operators continue to load passengers at unauthorized locations across the state capital.

The Ministry noted that mini-bus and tricycle (Keke) operators have also continued to load and offload passengers outside the designated Igbogene Transport Terminal, in violation of existing government regulations.

According to the government, these practices undermine ongoing efforts by the Prosperity Administration to establish a modern transportation network that guarantees safety, convenience, and orderliness for residents and visitors. The Ministry further stated that such actions are detrimental to the growth and development of the transport sector and run contrary to the urban renewal objectives of the current administration.

To address the situation, the government has directed all transport operators to strictly adhere to the following regulations:

All inter-state and intra-state transport vehicles must load passengers only at the Ekeki Motor Park and the Igbogene Transport Terminal.

Mini-buses and tricycles are required to terminate their operations at the Igbogene Transport Terminal and are permitted to operate only within Bayelsa State.

The Ministry warned that any transport operator or union found violating these directives will face sanctions in accordance with the law. Relevant enforcement agencies have been mandated to ensure strict compliance with the regulations.

The government called on transport operators and members of the public to cooperate with its efforts to build a safer, more efficient, and modern transportation system that supports the state's development agenda.

The announcement was signed by the Honourable Commissioner for Transport, Ayebaekipreye Brodrick.
